Hardaway did encourage Boyce to sign with UAB. I do believe he was working behind the scenes to push Tubby out. If I was a Memphis fan, I would consider that to be a good thing. But pushing a kid to play somewhere else when he knows that he might be the coach at Memphis soon and knowing that kid will want to play for him, is not a nice thing to do.
But that's my opinion and will not be shared by anyone here
He didn't know that. He knew that kid would not be happy with tubby.

I posted the quote from the UAB board about tampering. It was another poster that made it. I thought you were pretty reasonable in your comments. However, I don't agree that Penny was steering everybody away from Memphis so he could get the job. I think Tubby just sucked that bad in recruiting. But you are entitled to your opinion.
What is Boyce's game like? From my understanding, he scored a lot at Houston High while maybe playing out of position in the post. Then, he became a role player Wing at East, maybe playing the 2?
Is he a shooter or slasher? Defender? What positions can he guard?

Imo, athletic 3&D guy is his role. Can guard 2's and 3's. Bouncy. Has slash potential, but probably needs to improve his handle and beyond dunking, finishing at the rim.
Seems like he was ranked around 125-150 a couple of years ago, and never took the next step to move up the rankings.
Penny has gone after a lot of these guys. Wants to spread the floor and play fast.

On defense, I think I heard Penny say he wants to “get after it” and play like West Virginia.
I am very curious about how Penny intends to deploy his weapons. Coaches often talk about playing an uptempo style using lots of players but never implement or back down after blow out defeats. I think Penny means it because he is trying to build a brand. I believe we will play fast with pressure and learn to get better at it after ugly losses rather than abandoning it.

Penny is recruiting a bunch of "Shaka" type players...
6'6 ish and athletic who can guard multiple positions. If you can get 3 of those guys on the floor your defense should be solid and if they can shoot watch out.

True that most coaches say that. I think Penny will stay with it for a couple of reasons. First, it's a recruiting tool, i.e. we are NBA players and coaches and we are going to play the NBA style in college. Not this clog the lane stuff that we see so much in college now. 2nd, Penny will probably play a long rotation, 10 guys or so. Keeps players happy, keeps core guys out of foul trouble.
Like Coach K this year basically played 5 guys and went to a 2-3 zone. Be surprised if Penny ever does something like that.

Coach K had to go zone because the freshman couldn’t play man...Penny will keep his core as 2- 3 yr guys to help make up for 1 and dones. Plus many of the players he have now already know his style.
I just hope Penny can develop players like Kansas does and help them get better.
Great enterainment. Memphis Blazer (who's really a good dude, tells it like it is) going toe to toe in a punch out with some dude named Dee, funny chit. And hey MB, who are these 2 cats on your board named 58-56 (scary dude) and attablaze (idiot), wow those 2 dudes need some serious counseling, a little overboard on their unbounded hate for everything Memphis. LOL
