Football Style Guide is WRONG

As much as I hate to say it, I fully believe JMU is. Their fan base is more passionate and winning a natty even is FCS is big. ODU does not have a statewide presence that the purple dogs have. ODU as a school doesn’t have a statewide presence like JMU does, let alone their athletics. There are still people I meet who think ODU is D2 and are surprised to hear we are in the FBS

JMU, and probably VCU has a larger presence across the state. Thats why playing those schools was more helpful to ODU than CUSA. It was greater exposure in our market. I'm seeing more and more Liberty fans as well. They may have a niche market, but the students who actually go to school on campus are pretty engaged and most of their alumni are pretty proud and dedicated.

I see some JMU stickers (not a lot mind you) on cars in Hampton Roads, a lot less VCU and practically none repping Liberty. It's like a completely different world down here.

But it meshes exactly with what I said about where our alums live. 8 (probably closer to 9) out of 10 alums live in Hampton Roads. Hard to increase your presence in the state when they don't have to move away from the 757 for work.

I'm gonna throw the BS flag on the JMpoo crap. In all the years I've followed sports in this state. I have never ever never ever heard one single NON-JMpoo grad talk about JMU sports. EVER. No one but their fans have ever said anything about them. If it weren't for them being a big 'teacher college' I would rarely bump into many JMU grads.

I travel a lot in state. I wear my ODU gear as often as I can. I've had people talk to me about our 'new' football program. I've had people talk to me about women's basketball back in the day.

VCU's recent success in BB has generated great PR for the school. And they have done a great job promoting themselves. They are, as much as we would hate to admit, a good school, with an improving reputation. They just simply have horrible fans. I've never seen ANY school's fans treat fans from opposing schools as poorly as they do. And it is because of this horrendous lack of sportsmanship that I still think they suck. They are the trailer park trash of sports fandom.

I see a decent amount of JMU and VCU stickers around but far and away way more ODU flags and stickers. I think state vs national reputation are different. At the state level we're probably behind JMU and VCU. Nationally we're probably ahead of JMU behind VCU. As time goes on that gap from the F4 run and appearances will shorten. Especially if we can get back to getting into the NCAA's again.

I don't travel to the Western portion of the state, but I see very few JMU paraphernalia and I agree than zero non JMU grads talk about them. Heck, most of the grads don't even bring them up.

I do run into a lot of VCU grads, but mainly in Richmond, hardly ever any in NoVA or HR.

Liberty-I'm still waiting to run into one of them or see a bumper sticker.

Outside of HR, I don't run into ODU grads at all. But, I am always on campus and do see students that have school spirit. Its much more prevalent than when I was a student.

ODU will always have to fight the commuter school label and the problem with most staying in HR, but I'm not sure that JMU is certainly the 3rd most popular in the state........certainly not on an athletics level. If you told me VCU...maybe, simply based on basketball. Nationally, I would seriously doubt we are behind JMU. No one knows anything about their basketball team and people outside of the FCS schools don't care about FCS football at all.

JMU’s reputation in this state is much higher and better than ODU’s. I didn’t know ODU existed until I went to a Mason basketball game my junior year of high school and they played each other. I’ve know of JMU my entire life, and it was talked about and repped almost as much as VT and UVA where I’m from (Fairfax VA). Almost everyone applies to JMU, while many people think ODU is in the ghetto. Maybe our experiences are different but as much as I love my alma mater and bleed blue and silver, I’m not a blind homer to say ODU is more popular because we’re in FBS or because our women’s hoops team was good 20 years ago.

I'm sorry but did you just use your lack of knowledge of ODU as a 16 y/o to explain our reputation?

I knew of ODU when I lived across the country as a kid because of Ticha. I didn't know jack about JMU until I was offered an invite to their junior football camp. Does that say anything about JMU? Of course not. It's anecdotal and a useless barometer of either institution.

At best, we're all tied for a distant 3rd. I'll stick with JMU as #3. And watch out for W&M. New AD, already got them a FB game at Stanford, already got them intio CBB tourney vs Notre Dame. Been there less than a year. So much school pride, but long dormant fan base that's awakening. Alums everywhere.

As much as I hate to admit it, in most of Virginia the ODU brand is "unsafe and in the ghetto" first. I think its greatly exaggerated, but "you are what they say you are" in the minds of students and parents. That needs to change, but it can also be overcome. VCU, Temple, U of MD are all in bad parts of town as well, probably worse than ODU, but their academic, student life and sports reputations help overcome that. A "diversity" reputation doesn't overcome that. In the minds of racists it may even bolster it. Though we don't want those folks at our school anyway. Anyways, you'd be hard pressed to find any ODU gear west of I95. I'd wager Marshall has a better rep and fan base west of Charlottesville. Im in the DC area, and I do see ODU stuff occasionally, but much more JMU stuff, a little more VCU/GMU stuff and surprisingly more ECU stuff too. But they all pale in comparison to UVA, VT, UMD, WV and Penn St.

I was just expressing my experience. Growing up in northern VA, VT, UVa, and JMU were the top 3 schools in terms of popularity. When I told people I was going to ODU, many of them had never heard of the school before. Living in the DC area now, JMU still has a huge presence here with alumni and reputation and people who send their kids there. ODU is virtually non-existent up here, even to this day. I don’t mean to start an argument, but in the state of Virginia I have experienced that JMU is in the top 3 most popular schools in the state. If your experience of living in VA is different, then it is what it is. I can’t speak to what you experienced but to me JMU has always been the third most popular school with ODU not coming close, as much as I wish it did

No Virginia FCS football school is going to compare to ODU...ever..on a football basis. One off games vs. P5 won't change that. Even JMU went into VT and won and no one outside of the FCS crowd cares about JMU.

W&M would have to grow the basketball brand to a level of VCU for them to takeover. And certainly play in something better than a high school gym.

The high school gym was a half joking remark. My good friend is a big W&M booster and that is what he calls it. it has seats, but is designed like a high school arena and 2,500 people show up to games.

If you look at home football schedules, you clearly have the answer. I'll leave all these other posts about flags flying, bumper stickers displayed, what schools they personally knew growing up, and ghetto vs affluent locations to these other people but the 3rd most popular football program in the state will play out based on who you are relevant enough to host and who you can manage to beat over time. And eventually we'll get to that second part.

I disagree. The third most popular football program would be the one that has the most fans in the seats, the most eyes and ears on media about that team, the most people talking about it around the water cooler, gets the most press and sells the most stuff.
