All of this is well and good. But things won't get better until coaches schedule better.

They are now going to get spoon fed two games each year. That's good that the teams are going to get a little help. But now they have to help themselves.

Last year, only Coastal had a non conference SOS in the top 100. Only CCU, Louisiana and Little Rock had one in the upper half (175 or better).

Arkansas State, South Alabama and Texas State were downright abysmal.

AD's need to do a better job of watching over scheduling and coaches need to grow a pair and quit scheduling to not get fired.

It won't be much better from us this year. Our previous staff had set most of this year's schedule.

I hate to break it to you, but our basketball coaches don't handle scheduling. It goes much higher up the food chain. Coaches can make contacts to fill games, but the rest is left up to the Athletic Department. Balado got us a home and home with FAU when he was hired last year, and he used his contacts with UNC Wilmington's coach to get us a Neutral Site game with them this year, but that's about it

I don't like defending our basketball scheduling, but it really is difficult. We have one decent Instate option in UCA, and they play Little Rock twice a year, but our deals often go non renewed. Out of the regional opponents, Tennessee Martin is willing, but not regularly, Southeast Missouri doesn't talk to us, that leaves us with no single regional team willing to play in Jonesboro. We've tried contacting the MVC, but even their lower tier teams refuse to play here. We have to work nationally and just grab whoever the hell is available...which means SWAC's, MEAC's, D2's and a few Southland schools. That's just what we're stuck with.

As opposed to the full Women's Basketball arenas now?

We're one of the few league schools with the ability to put up an acceptable number for Women's Basketball games. For us, it's always made sense to play them separate. Especially given how poorly our Men's team draws.

Works for me. When there are doubleheaders if you have good seats you end up having to flush someone out of your seats. I'm not up for sitting through two complete games on one trip.

First we couldn't get the big boys here anymore because we beat OS 30 years ago and now we can't get regional crappy teams because....because.

Excuse after excuse after excuse. Our scheduling is embarrassing because we don't care.

I never argued why we couldn't get Regional teams to play here. I have no idea why we can't. For some reason we just don't, and if we can't get regional teams, scheduling becomes impossible. The other issue is that our fans really have not responded when we do get the UTM's and UCA's of the world in. We've got too many old folks who remember the good old days when Memphis and Ole Miss would come here, neither of which is going to happen anymore, no matter how hard we try.

We play SEMO in every sport on earth but basketball, I still haven't figured that one out. Only thing I know is they hired Dickey after we fired him...but surely that's not still the reason.

Found this, its an interview that a NDSU affiliated station did with Mark Adams, who was the consultant for our schedule. He said the concept is that since the High Majors are freezing Mid Majors out of scheduling, that the Mid Major Leagues have to take things into their own hands.

He railed a ton on Preseason tournaments as well, talked about how they exist for profit, and provide zero benefit to mid and low major programs. High Majors get to play in some nice location against each other every year, while low and mid majors get one buy game at a P5 and two neutral site games against often poor mid majors in the middle of nowhere out of the deal. Said the 3rd phase of the plan is to create Preseason Tournaments that specifically target Mid Majors and are arranged with RPI in mind and not money. Also said he is in talks with other leagues and other teams about joining in. Essentially, CUSA, Horizon, and the SBC are all test cases. If it works, he expects a lot more leagues to join in.

Guy clearly knew his stuff. Cited Little Rock a couple years ago and UL this year as examples of teams that would have benefitted from this arrangement.

I read this (and a similar comment in a previous thread) and it made me curious about women's basketball attendance. So I took the two year average for all teams.

Little Rock - 1,967
Texas Arlington - 1,830
Texas State - 1,740
Arkansas State - 1,559
South Alabama - 1,402
Louisiana Monroe - 1,262
Louisiana - 958
Troy - 910
Georgia Southern - 447
Georgia State - 412
Appalachian State - 369
Coastal Carolina - 303

Little Rock has always drawn pretty well for Women's Basketball, but they almost always prefer to play doubleheaders. I've never understood that.

AState created a ton of split doubleheaders to try and make up for the losses associated with 5pm games. All of our Saturday DH's were separate admission, and a couple of times we'd do a school day game for the Midweek date to create a separate ticket.

I will tell you that you are missing a decimal point with the ULM women's average. The only way those numbers are correct is season ticket sales (which come as a package for men and women) and people showing up for the men's game and catching the last 5 minutes of the women's game. The coach is absolutely horrid and in his last year so he will be gone. He has gotten progressively worse and we will be lucky to have 100 folks watching the women (mostly parents).
