RE: My internet speed problems (slow sports season, so leave it here, please)
Just be glad you guys don't have to deal with Ritter Communications in Millington and Tipton County. They've oversold to too many users and the infrastructure can't handle it. You have to call every couple of weeks when you keep losing service and magically it works for a couple of days.

The last time I called I was asking the technician about the possibility of RF leaks that could be causing interference in my neighborhood or if setting up a static IP address vs DHCP would help the connection and he immediately did everything he could to 'escalate' the issue and get me off the phone.

I've found that other than telling me to reboot my router, their helpdesk isn't much help at all.

O goody! A Whiner thread.

My internet is the worst in the U S of egging A.

It used to die almost every night and have to be rebooted.

We have tried every internet provider that services this area with little improvement and are now using a podunk provider called Cal Ore —just because their tower is visible thru the trees.

Lately we’ve attacked the problem from a different angle by investing in high-end hospital quality power chords and EMF reducing ferrite beads.

The ferrite beads really did help the most . We can stream!! And boy o boy is the pic clear, lit popping with colors!

Ok...Can I segue to Tubby whining now.

Do you live in a standalone home or in condos or apartments? This too can affect the signal. You may have to find a channel on your router that is not utilized a lot in that area. Comcast can help you with that too.

is your modem docsis 3.0 or 3.1

to get higher internet speeds you need 3.1

which equates to more channels/bands

If you can, take the router out and get a dynamic ip straight to you computer. Then do your speed test. If it's still slow your modem is probably bad. If it's slow after you replace your modem then it's on the provider.

I swear, you people are not listening/ reading. For those that ask if I'm in Germantown or wherever, my location is listed right there under my name. As I said, my speed test seems to be quite a bit faster, more than double what it was with AT&T a week ago. I just got this Xfinity connection setup on Monday. My whole question mark In my head is, why is my speed test faster now, but pictures and images are slower to load on my computer and especially on our phones? The 2.4 and 5.0 gigahertz settings are an interesting thought. I will look into that. Also the settings inside the router that someone mentioned, I can't remember exactly what it was, but I will look into that too. Thanks for all the help I appreciate it guys! I think I may start with a phone call to customer service as some of you have suggested.

I also had to set some of my wireless to the 5.0 ghz channel and some to the 2.4 ghz. If you have too many on the same, it definitely slows things down.

Yeah I get it... you remember I'm the one that would prefer people either consistently use the proper icons, or let's have separate forums. ha ha. You're so clever.

Is that the attention you require? Is that good?

So, I went in to my Asus wireless router settings and changed the auto switch to off, and set everything to 5.0ghz. BAM. Problem seems to be solved. I will withhold judgement 'til later on tonight when we are really taxing it.

RE: My internet speed problems (slow sports season, so leave it here, please)
It's not about the speed, it's about ping and latency. I have Ritter cable and it's horrible for video conferencing and gaming. I'm on their 50 MBPS DL/10 MBPS UL plan. I run speed tests all the time and most of the time they do achieve 40-50 MBPS DL/5-10 MBPS UL, but the real missing thing is ping/latency times. I tested those too and Ritter fails horribly in that area. I can't even have a decent video conferencing for my job when I need to work from home.

RE: My internet speed problems (slow sports season, so leave it here, please)
I I ive up here in lil ole Kensucky, and I have Spectrum (merged Charter and Time Warner Internet provider)
I have the $49 100 megabit service...and extremely happy .
First lesson I learned years ago, buy your own modem(s).
No modem service rental fee, and even though I have a desktop computer, laptop computer, 5 android phones, 3 android internet tv boxes, PS3 & PS4 on the network...no speed problems whatsoever.

@Geo, the farther your devices are away from the wifi modem, the slower the speeds will be...whether you are using the 2.4 ghz signal or 5 ghz signal.
My wifi router uses both, and most of my devices use the 2.4 ghz signal.
I have a cordless phone, so I had to set the 2.4 ghz signal to channel 11, so I didn't kill the 2.4 ghz signal every time I used the phone.

it has its positives and negatives. t
Positives, no modem rental fees, negatives...your router goes out you can"t just go get another from your provider...you have to purchase another one.
I've never had a problem with my modems or routers, so the last bit is a moot point for me.

Geez, I have been on this board since 2009 and I never noticed that "location" status before, but I got it now. Thanks for insolently pointing that.

Sorry... a little punchy today. Don't take it personally. I just painstakingly explain my situation, and people start talking about how "it's a good thing to be hooked up to your wifi". I never said it wasn't. I just said my phone is constantly telling me that I'm hooked up to it. My whole point was before a week ago while we had AT& t U-verse, it was not constantly telling us that we were hooked up to the Wi-Fi. It only told us we were hooked up to the Wi-Fi with AT&T U-verse once when we walked in the door. It didn't keep telling us over and over and over again. I found that very odd, like that is an indicator that something is wrong. It was just stuff like that that was irritating me with this thread.

Actually you haven't at all explained anything at all painstakingly. More like taking your car to your mechanic, just saying it doesn't work and getting mad when he doesn't magically fix it without looking under the hood.

- No description of what speeds you are getting on each device
- No description of what ping you are getting
- No description of what speed you are paying for
- No description of how many people, how many devices, how many computers and phones
- No description of the layout of your home
- No description of where your router is in relation to all the devices
- No description of if you are on 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz
- No description of your router and it's quality

It is kind of funny when someone who claims to not be savvy and clearly isn't judging by how he is posting about his problems is "irritated" with posters who are asking the right questions and trying to guide him.

People have been giving you good advice and all you are doing is complaining and being lazy, instead of calling your ISP.
