I’m just fine with what BSU is making. After all the bravado of navy rolling into the AAC contract it appears that’s not the case. Chuck really looks great after all his comments on BSU and special deals. Good luck this year. BSU is getting early season hype as usual but an earl trip to oky light will be a big test.

So, let me get this right. If NBC shows up and only wants western division games for it's contract but the east teams still get an equal share of the money the west division got a sweetheart deal?

LOL... Don't think I ever said this anywhere but cool question

The Notre Dame deal with the ACC is almost identical to Navy n AAC only difference if I'm not mistaken Notre Dame owns their football revenue while their basketball revenue is shared with their half affiliated conference.

My point is some programs hold a different standard b/c of their outstanding rich sexy history something boise state for example just doesn't come close to matching.

Navy's not keeping the money. All monies are flowing into the conference pot except for the Army-Navy game cash. All the AAC did was grant Navy their home game rights to sell at a premium to CBS thus insuring that their tradition of Saturday only games is protected from whomever acquires our future rights to the AAC plus we got to add a bi-annual Notre Dame game to use as a way to guarantee a better contract 07-coffee3
So does Navy get a full football share from the conference plus what they get from the Army Navy game?

You understand that is exactly what BSU has with the MWC that navy’s smart ad felt the need to point out? I think it’s good for navy that they are able to secure their games on the station they want. Will be interesting to see how much they make.

To be fair, the Navy AD has never said anything derogatory abut the deal Boise got from the MW. His comments were made about the deal Boise wanted from the AAC--which I believe was probably just---"you'll need to pay us more than everyone else" (which was on top of the AAC already offsetting some of the Boise's travel subsidy costs in the Big West). The reality is the Boise deal in the MW has caused (and is still causing) friction among members and has been reworked multiple times due to that friction. To the best of my knowledge--the Navy deal hasn't been an issue for the AAC membership. 04-cheers

I'm confused. Doesn't BSU keep all the money from their home games? Or was it conference bonuses based off of ESPN appearance which are pretty much locked up by BSU? How is that the same thing as Navy with their home games. The Army Navy game is a completely different animal as that game has more tradition, press, and history that pretty much all college football including the P5

The money from Boise home games is dropped into the shared pot of money for the MW. Part of their deal was the implementation of a "national television bonus". Games on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 all qualify for the bonus. Where Boise screws the rest of the conference is on this bonus. Boise home games can essentially only appear on ESPN networks. They are the only one with this guarantee. The primary rights holder for the MW is CBS-Sports. Games on CBS-Sports do not qualify for the bonus. So, CBS-Sports--who gets first pick due to being the primary rights holder, grabs many of the best home games involving the best teams, thus, soaking up most of the games that would have enough appeal to possibly get on on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.

Because of this arrangement, Boise always is the top bonus earner and its ussually not even close. Worse yet, some of the best competing teams, lag far behind because thier games are attractive--- and are grabbed by CBS-Sports using their rights as primary network partner---meaning they cant be picked by ESPN (where they would qualify for the bonus).

No that is not the deal.

Navy's games were extra inventory that was sold to CBS at a mark up because it was available and cbssports paid the most.

This is no different than the big 10 splitting their 98 home games 30 to fox, 30 to ESPN, 38 to their own network. (I know this is not the actual numbers). Navy will get the same amount of money regardless of this deal as everyone else does for football.

Boise constructed their deal in such a way that they are guaranteed a bigger portion of the money every year no matter what.

Navy's money works very simply as a football member they receive 70% of 1 full share of the media contract. They receive a full share of cfp and bowl split money.

They also get money from their non-aac sport media contract. The money specific to Army-Navy football game.

The full AAC member teams receive a full share of the media deal. A full share of the cfp and bowl split money.

This deal is only unique in the fact that Aresco was able to sell the games and ensure that Navy was able to keep its preferred time slots.

So basically Aresco sold the 3rd through 6th best games (Army is 1st, then our pick) on Navy's schedule like they were top notch football games regardless of opponents so long as CBS sports gets the Air Force game.

Exactly...Boise should feel lucky to get an equal share of the AAC. Especially when we will be getting $6 million and getting more cfp money.

Two unique aspects of this deal really matter to Navy --

Nationwide telecast of other sports, Basketball & Lacrosse really matter to a lot of alums, spread around the USA.

Guaranteed 5 Sat afternoon home games. At USNA, 5 year class reunions are an local industrial activity. Classes have reunions every 5th year. It's a huge undertaking. My class, next reunion is 2020. Our block of hotel rooms is already sold out.

The AD is doing this to keep the Alums happy & making the pilgrimage back every 5 years.

The AAC is doing it for

1) Premium pay for those individual games, something they may have not got within the bigger package where a navy vs a bad team would be the fourth or fifth picked game is instead paid like the first or second.

2) Exposure they are the center piece of a Saturday football line up.

3) Relationships, with both Navy a valued member and a network who has interest in paying well for the AAC product. Both seem very happy right now.

That the Notre Dame game and a pick not air Force stay in the fold as well as 3 away conference games every year is icing. A lil bump in revenue for everyone before the current ESPN deal expires is the cherry on top.

There is nothing but positives in this deal unless we sell our other packages at 4 million a game. Then the money looks bad but even then it's a small portion sliced off for a unique member to maintain the sort of traditions that we brought them on for. Should we sign a deal also showing games and Olympic sports on CBS sports it will also only strengthen the public perception of Navy's association with the conference.

You understand that is exactly what BSU has with the MWC that navy’s smart ad felt the need to point out? I think it’s good for navy that they are able to secure their games on the station they want. Will be interesting to see how much they make.

So how on GODS green earth are people saying Navy just got the same type of deal as Boise?

Only those looking to minimize? I've posted the BSU term sheet before and it is quite extensive. From what we know, there is no comparison as far as negative financial consequences. Though IIRC, BSU does have a cap on non-Sat. games which does affect game day $ like Navy's Sat. deal.

Even if Navy got a slightly special deal, they are in a much different position from Boise wanting a special deal. Boise should have taken the offer back in the day. Now the AAC is going to get a huge contract and they are stuck in the MWC with less money and less exposure.

The reality was that Boise didnt want a "special" deal in late 2012. They were actually asking for a "more special" deal than they already had. The AAC was already giving them a special deal by agreeing to offset much of the "$900K in travel subsidies" connected to Boise's Big West invitation. There may have also been some help in paying he entry fee to join the Big West.

So, in essentially, Boise already had a special deal. They wanted an even more special deal. Thats probably part of the reason the "hell no" was pretty emphatic.

A couple more data points to mention that might finally quiet the "sports rights bubble has burst" crowd.

WWF just got a 5 year billion dollar deal (three times their old NBC deal) from FOX.

It appears FOX and ESPn Plus will be splitting the UFC rights for about 350 million---more than double the current deal (the ESPN portion of this has been finalized).

Of interest---NBC did not pick up any new programming. I think they will bid and bid hard for the AAC.
