MyBB The "Rice Report", per Harry Minium
"Old Dominion President John Broderick, whose basketball program has never been sanctioned by the NCAA, said “I do not see one recommendation that I cannot support,” and that’s good news."

Despite the too-long absence from meaningful postseason play, ODU has much to be proud for.

I realize that this thread is not anywhere near as invigorating as another rehash of the countless shortcomings of Coach Jones. But here's another take on what I think is an important topic -- especially for a program that seems committed to run things clean.

I don’t have kids by choice, but if I ever made a mistake and accidentally had one, I’d tell him never to go to college.

Crippling debt and now you are one of millions and millions who is nothing more than a face in the crowd unless your parents can pull strings for you.

Meanwhile trade schools are pumping out extremely productive members of society who can make more than any college grad will for decades.

Crazy how times have changed.

With the ever growing cost and ever waning job preparedness being produced by colleges, it seems we may be nearing a tipping point. Some large corporations like GE are starting hire high school students and recent grads so that they can train them themselves. This is interesting if it is the start of a trend. It makes a lot of sense when you consider that these corporations constantly complain about the preparedness of college grads. If you have to train them from scratch anyway, why not get them early, when they are cheap, impressionable, and you have plenty of time to get them up to speed.

Ideally you could do some of both. I think that is why intern programs work so well. Just shift the balance more on the industry side. That way you can still explore different fields and earn a degree. Not everyone knows what they want to do out of high school. Without a degree it makes it harder to leave if they don't like their job.

Its funny that every generation thinks the generations below them are inferior....

I can see the benefit of tradesmen. They are in short supply and its possible to make some money at it. Personally, every one that works for me has a college degree (or is about to graduate). Their future earning potential is adequate to offset college costs. They are more well rounded. I have many friends that are great business owners that did not got to college and I respect that as well.

In retrospect I wish I had the ability to do a trade. But just as I have a face for radio and a voice for newspapers, I have the physical dexterity for an office job. Well, at least I wouldn't have spent seven years over two schools with three major changes just to wind up with a ... *shudders* ... communications degree. If we ever get to a point where we're killing people based on their ability to contribute to the world, well, perhaps I should be preemptively taken down to avoid the Christmas rush.

I'd say 35 is the cut-off. Over 35 and the guy with the college degree is more well rounded. Under 35 and the tradesman is more well rounded. I know it is a generalization and there are plenty of exceptions, but there is almost nothing as useless as a college educated millennial.

After spending three years working on my portrait project of shipyard workers, I can not tell you how impressive it is to see folks who graduate from the various apprentice programs from area shipyards. As one shipyard president told me, they work full time and go to college too. I’m not sure how they do it but it’s extremely impressive!

At least one of those schools wasn’t Randolph Macon! Sadly I know your pain.
