He's an okay coach but not great. His records over like 16 seasons with North Texas and LSU were average. Made it to the playoffs twice with North Texas and once with LSU, but never made it out of the first round. He's now an associate coach at Nevada, and maybe he did help coaching up the players to the sweet sixteen this past season. Who knows?

Honestly, if Penny wants to run NBA sets, I would rather have Sam Mitchell come aboard or another former NBA coach.

I do not believe Johnny Jones will be the guy. I have a better than decent source and that’s not happening. I guess lots of things are possible, but I don’t think this will happen.

Not that this matters at all, but I don’t like the idea of Jones. I don’t think he’s good at all.

Give me Sam Mitchell 8 Days a week over Jones.

For me, since Larry M-effin Brown is out, I am out.

Hire Sam Mitchell and let's move the whatnot on.

I like the concept

We need Larry Brown as a full time consultant.

Make it happen.

I’m sure it has already been answered in one of the million Larry Brown threads but what does a consultant even do?

Wolo often sites facts that are not correct, I have not known him to often be incorrect about Tiger program predictions.

You're being redundant, again.

The thing is Wolo is our doofus. As much criticism as he gets I think most people do it in the spirit of fun. He's as much a mainstay of Tiger athletics as Big Jack, just not quite as bright from all appearances.

RE: Wolo guarantees Sam Mitchell
Jones or Trent Johnson are exactly the kind of former NCAA coaches we should expect. Had some decent years but more disappointing years. As a HEAD COACH. We're not asking the AC to be the HC. Plus, these guys aren't going to backstab to try to steal the job. And they probably aren't going to be fielding HC jobs every year either. They would be fine in the role.

Mitchell would more than likely be fine as well. Former NBA COY who never could consistently manage a winner. Never been in the NCAA but knows the game and the NBA, and is also close to Larry Brown.

It comes down to whomever Penny is most comfortable with. This hire will not make or break Penny. Let him make the decision, and let's move on.

I don't always do it in the spirit of fun. I truly think he is bad and that we deserve better. We're upgrading coaches, fundraising, facilities, the entire department - why shouldn't we upgrade our radio network?

Man, I'll have to respectfully disagree. Big Jack was a bad azz and Wolo, well, is like a wet piece of toast.

Agree '87. Blue4Ever is right that Wolo is a doofus, but never thought of him as our doofus. Just a doofus.

In 2012, after Fuente was hired, and we still thought Josh had a clue, I know a small group of boosters met with Bowen when he started as AD. Said we have upgraded facilities (first game with the new big screen was that September), have young aggressive new coaches in the revenue sports, and it's time to put Wolo out to pasture and upgrade there too. Not the biggest Bowen fan, but a tough position to put him in, i.e fire the longtime announcer, who sucks, as one of his first acts as AD.

RE: Wolo guarantees Sam Mitchell
I really don't like any of the names being thrown around as an assistant coach. Most of them left with problems one way or another, and none were winning coaches consistently. Sam Mitchell has had a hell of a life, and lots of death with family and friends which have affected him emotionally and mentally. I've heard he is very close with Kevin Garnett, and helped him improve while at Minnesota. I don't know much about X's & 0's, as supposedly he coached a slow down game. That isn't going to fit with Penny. He probably is the most qualified of all the names mentioned, so if that's who Penny selects, so be it.

If they are winning HCs they aren't quitting their HC jobs where they are winning to be someone else's AC.

I don't think anyone criticizes the terrible job he does "in the spirit of fun". I don't like it at all that he half-azzes his job with no preparation. He should have been fired years and years ago.

I was never anti-Sam Michell but I would’ve preferred someone with college HC experience. That being said...I’ve always said I’ll trust Penny and he should be allowed to hire who he wants. I’ve come around on the idea of Mitchell instead of Trent Johnson or Johnny Jones. Think there’s more to sell with Mitchell on the staff.
