School president A. Zachary Faison Jr. said that the school expects to hear by July 9 about the transition into the NCAA and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. That would package the EWC with 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the SIAC. EWC currently plays in the NAIA.

The D2 Membership Committee meeting on the acceptance on new members is July 7-8. All the announcements from the schools about their advancement to full member status, to the next year in the process, and to begin the reclassifying process will start rolling out on July 9.

The February report is out now. Edward Waters and Emory & Henry are the only new applicants.

Does Emory & Henry have a conference home in mind?

The Wasps were already accepted to the South Atlantic Conference in November. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference offered the Edward Waters College Tigers an invite in July 2019. EWC was not allowed to apply because they are on NAIA probation which ends at the conclusion of this current academic year.

The Emory & Henry move to D-2 perplexes me. There's no real marketing/growth upside to D-2, and they're leaving a conference of institutional peers in the ODAC. Does anyone know what their strategic thinking is?

Here are a couple quotes from their president:

"The move to Division II will help expand our fan base and bring much-needed visibility for this wonderful institution. We're determined to be a leader in higher education for Middle Appalachia, and our move into the South Atlantic Conference and the ranks of Division II athletics is a powerful way to position us as a place of connections. We look forward to growing the rivalries, relationships within the SAC and welcoming new guests to our Emory campus."

"The move to Division II is another critical step in positioning Emory & Henry as the flagship higher education institution of Middle Appalachia for scholars and athletes," added Wells. "I think the transition will help diversity our campus in many aspects according to our strategic plan and I look forward to Emory & Henry's growth and presence beyond Southwest Virginia. This potential opportunity will bring new students and guests to our community and bring greater name recognition to new markets with more robust and diverse populations."

Yup. E&H might be leaving a conference where all but one of the schools are in Virginia, but from eyeballing the member maps on Wikipedia, they'll be closer to at least six SAC schools than their nearest school in the ODAC, where most of the schools are clumped around the U.S. 29 corridor (with Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan as eastern outliers). Southwest Virginia is a different place from the rest of the state, and they have a lot more in common with Middle Appalachia than they do even north of Roanoke.

I think this move will work out for them, and they're probably the only ODAC school that would benefit from a move.

Emory & Henry will fit in very well. The NC schools in the SAC have a pretty good reputation and fan support.

Unbelievable.

Northwood University Athletics Changing Conference Affiliation

From the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference on July 1, 2022.

North wood is tiny and private. They are probably struggling to compete with the big state GLIAC schools.

Still surprised that the GMAC and Notre Dame College haven’t tied the knot yet.

Judson (Ala.) is closing. Apparently they had a grand total of 12 new students set to enroll in the fall. Is that bad? That seems bad.

Yes, it was bad. Judson (AL) is a women's college. They competed athletically in the USCAA. They struggled financially for years, and had to raise a minimum of $500,000 at the end of last year to open for the spring semester. They were able to raise as much as $1.3 million to stay open this semester. But, they were unable to raise the money to stay open permanently, and one of their creditors called the note on a loan, causing the trustees to vote to close the school.

They had 142 students this year, graduated 40, and were expecting only 80 returning students.

Judson was at one time the sister school to Howard College, both located in Marion, AL. Howard would later move to Birmingham, and would be renamed Samford University upon receipt of a major gift and relocation to its current location.

Wow!!! That's sad to hear. I know of 2 young women who went there. One I knew from going to junior college with her before she transferred to Judson, and the other transferred from Judson to my alma mater, the University of Montevallo. From another friend who went to Marion Military Institute, I found out that many of the cadets from MMI dated girls attending Judson because MMI and Judson were both in the same city.

Ah, looked further and see that UT system was interested in taking over and expanding the MMC nursing program, but the President offered the whole school and he will then become a Chancellor in the UT system.

It smells very bad. Hopefully they have some alums that will challenge this. If they don't, then good riddance to a school that even their own grads don't care about.

They have stated they will possibly look at a new athletic affiliation in the future.

I guess it's official. There hasn't been an official announcement on their athletics web site, and on the main site there is only a headline that the Governor passed a budget (that allowed for the acquisition).

I was alerted to it in a press release for MMC hiring a new AD:

http://www.goredhawks.com/article/3872.php

The budget passage announcement is here, which includes more meaningful information in the text:

https://martinmethodist.edu/2021/04/29/t...ts-for-ut/

And there's a nice video here of how excited the community is that this will happen (from December):

The good thing is the new UT-Southern will be expanding as a result.

I guess they didn't want to be UT-Pulaski.

I know nothing about the inner workings of the local United Methodist conference there, but the United Methodist denomination is splitting into three denominations: the existing organization, progressive, and conservative/traditionalist. Some congregations and regional conferences will choose to leave the existing denomination for one more to their leanings, while the existing United Methodist Church will most likely become more progressive itself. The agreement was scheduled to be approved last year, but the pandemic caused the action to be pushed out to next year's scheduled general conference.

I have no idea how much money Martin Methodist has been getting from the denomination, or of their relationship (trustees, etc.). Nor do I know how the impending Methodist split will affect other schools. The move to the UT system may be purely a coincidence, but the timing lines up with the church split.

With all of that in mind, the president of Martin Methodist is going to come out ahead with a position in the UT system.

I can't believe the constituents of that small college are letting that happen. To me, that would be a huge betrayal. Does no one involved care anything about the schools current mission, their history, or believe in its future?

If they had done all they could and were forced to close, or be very close to it, I would understand. But "proactively" closing is a bizarre move.
