elsewhere in Division III realignment

St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minn.) from UMAC to MIAC in 2021-22 (all sports)

Macalester, already a MIAC member in hoops/Olympic sports, returns football from the Midwest Conference to the MIAC in 2021.

These moves coincide with the departure of St. Thomas to ??? (they hope, Division I and the Summit League)

Also the MIAC is going to two 5-team divisions in football with position week/championship game in the final week of the regular season. Heavyweights Saint John's and Bethel were placed in opposite divisions, so this must be great for fans who don't think Ohio State and Wisconsin play each other for the B1G championship often enough.

Augustana SD has been turned down by the Summit for at least a year.

This doesn’t surprise me. I wonder how long ND College is going to stay in the MEC with the WV schools.

Never understood why this didn’t happen when the MEC was formed. Which side was against it?

From what I understand from the D2 board, the Mountain East was formed in part to be a football-first conference and also to ditch certain West Virginia private schools. A majority of the former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools left to form the MEC, leaving the remnant of the WVIAC to disband. They have since let non-football schools into the conference, and have let the private schools come aboard.

Yes, Notre Dame of Ohio and the GMAC should be talking.

Someone more familiar with the situation can explain it better.

It started with Virginia-Wise. When Virginia-Wise was joining D2, they applied to the WVIAC. The vote to admit went pretty much along football/non-football lines. There were enough non-football schools voting "No" to deny the application. This added to the animosity between the sides that lead to the split. Alderson Broaddus was a non-football school at the time; their first varsity season was 2013. So, when the MEC formed it included the football playing WVIAC schools and surprisingly Wheeling (Jesuit) while the non-football schools went to the G-MAC. Seton Hill was originally joining the MEC before deciding to join the PSAC with Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

Converse College also going co-ed starting in 2021 including changing name to University. That means they are adding men's sports as well.

Not many women's all female colleges and universities left.

I feel like South Carolina has a ton of private schools for a state of its size

Iowa Wesleyan leaving Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (football only) with intention to return to NAIA:

https://umacathletics.com/news/2020/6/8/...UL_meYQBeM

As has been mentioned, Iowa Wesleyan has been in financial trouble. They are best known to outsiders as where a young Hal Mumme served as head coach, assisted by a young Mike Leach. Dana Holgorsen played there at that time.

There's only speculation on that thus far:

They say they are looking at two of the possible conferences in the area. I can think of Chicagoland, GPAC, AMC or Heart.

Bellarmine field hockey will affiliate with the MAC starting this fall when they move up to Division I. Nobody else in the ASUN sponsors that sport besides Liberty. MAC FH will be Bellarmine, App State, Longwood, Ball State, CMU, Kent State, Miami U and Ohio.

SIU Edwardsville will switch its men's soccer affiliate membership from the MAC back to the Missouri Valley next fall (2021). This will save the Valley's auto bid by getting it back to 6 teams (that's good!). It will also drop the MAC to only 5 teams and put it on the path to losing its AQ in fall 2023 (that's bad!)

So of those, it seems like only the Redhawks play their Men's Hockey on the ice and their Women's Hockey on the grass/astroturf.

I remember when we were living in Oz and the boys came home all excited, "They play hockey in Newcastle!" I told them to check out whether it was ice hockey or field jockey (guessing the answer, since the bus I usually caught to get to the train station went be the fields). They came back the next day, dejected, "It's field hockey." 03-weeping

The MAC will try to get its numbers back up to six, somehow, but I have no idea what school it would possibly be available. They made a big deal about not wanting to have multi-division affiliates when they let Hartwick go, and no Hartwick is playing in Division III, so they are no longer an option.

Since the Sunbelt is sitting at 6 and now losing a team, one option would be to merge with a Northern and Southern division ... AFAIR, you don't need a full conference round robin if you have a double round robin in each division, so there might be a divisional double round robin and four cross division games, so there'd only be two of the longer cross division trips each year.

That'd mean bringing Howard along for the ride to balance out the numbers, but you wouldn't want to drop either WVU or Central Arkansas from a merged soccer conference if you could help it. More extreme would be four school divisions and bring along only one affiliate into the Southern division, but whether it would be WVU or Central Arkansas would be a tough call.
