Tarleton State's Consultant Study To Joining FCs And WAC, SLC
Tarleton State's Figures On joining The WAC

This is a benchmark figures for Tarleton State on joining the WAC and the Southland Conferences. Southland is really not looking right now to add teams, but the WAC is. I have a feeling they get an invite to the WAC by June of this year.

If they get a WAC invite, where does their football team go? I don't know why they would want to join the SLC to be honest. What's the point of being in such a large one bid league? Sure, a lot more regionality, but the SLC doesn't need another team.

Southland does need an affiliate for football to even it out. Tarleton State can't be full member of the Southland yet, but when a change in a few years from now? Tarleton State and UTRGV could find themselves a spot there. This could build Tarleton State up to be ready when the time comes when the Southland needs them.

Serious question Dancing.

If football independence was not an issue, would you be okay with the WAC?

Same, nth.

If the WAC lacks the vision/ambition/leadership to be anything other than a stepping stone for D2 call ups, it's time for more than just NMSU to step off this stone.

Hurd lacks vision and ambition and leadership. Should've been replaced.

What schools are going to join the WAC? Give me an example of schools Hurd should go after.

I thought we had a bunch of no names schools when the new WAC came about. Honestly who the F is Tarleton State? I’d rather see this conference die than to have schools like that in it

Tarleton State is already in the WAC. They go by the name of Chicago State. At least Chicago State is in a real market with a real arena.

So its better to have Chicago St which is totally ignored by their market and own students over a school outside of Dallas? Any conference would take TSU over CSU.

Tarleton State does have a better men's basketball program than more than half of the WAX. They could challenge New Mexico State for the title in a few years. It is better them adding another Chicago State or a UMKC to the conference.

They have an arena that is never filled, in a market that doesn't care about them. Media markets mean nothing the WAC.

NMSU needs to be in the MWC, plain and simple.

The point is, no conference would take Chicago State in their present state. They have a home in the WAC because they are members and the WAC needs them. They have a 7,000 seat arena in the 3rd largest market in the country. They have the potential to be much more than they are, but they are badly mismanaged.

Tarleton State is in Stephenville, 95 miles outside of Dallas. To get into D1, Tarleton State would have to pay $1.4 million for the application. They would need to add scholarships for football and find a football conference. They would need to add men’s and women’s soccer. Probably one more female sport. They need to upgrade facilities. Their arena, called the Wisdom Gym, seats about 3,000 and was built in 1972. Being a state school on a $9 million athletic budget, I don’t see how they could
financially make the move.

Academically, a lot of school presidents will not look at Tarleton as a academic gem. They do not have a great academic reputation. Stephenville’s leading industry is agriculture. Some schools belong at the D2 level and there is nothing wrong with that. There are already 23 D1 schools in Texas. That state does not need another D1 school. The WAC does not need another Chicago State.

The topic is about Tarleton State as a potential option for the WAC. Let’s stick to that rather than say what conference we’d prefer our school to be in, please.

To help give the WAC a lifeline, I’d love to see Tarleton State added. They’d be UTRGV’s travel partner so it would help bridge things a bit down in Texas for the conference. Guess we’ll see how things shake out in the next couple months.

Plus, it could open up for West Texas A&M to follow Tarleton State into D1 in the WAC which could reunite them as a rival with New mexico State.

Tarleton State is doing some upgrades to their facilities. Football stadium adding more seating, new turf and all that. $26.4 million being spent.

Looks like a new building for volleyball courts and all that which could also mean men's wrestling.

Recreational Building

Basketball is at 3212.
I think they did spent some money renovating their other sports including their basketball gym to seat more. They could be expanding the seating for basketball as we speak.

They are spending a lot of money on their football facility, but how does that help in the WAC?

https://tarleton.edu/division1/documents...-bauer.pdf

As you read through the rough draft of this discussion to move to D1, the numbers are based on getting into the Southland Conference. They think they will make enough money with the move up to D1 to offset the expenses:

Report Conclusion: It appears that the only financial difference between Division I and Division II is the application fee (plus any instant replay costs for the stadium). So the real question for decision makers at Tarleton State University is whether or not the benefits over the life of the project are worth the initial investment of $1,600,000. It is as yet unclear how much of these costs can be covered by increased donations.

The application fee to the NCAA has gone up from $1.4 million to $1.6 million. The report is based on a move to the Southland Conference. This is a football school that also plays basketball. They feel that they will save on travel expenses if they move from the Lone Star Conference to the Southland Conference. That is probably true.

If they are invited to the Southland for all sports, moving to D1 makes sense for them. If not, then the cost of being in the WAC is not worth it. The travel expenses will go up in the WAC. They need to add men's and women's soccer to join the WAC. Their basketball budget of a little over $700,000 needs to double. Can they attract enough basketball talent to Stephenville to keep their RPI out of the 300-350 range?

Did you see in the report, the finances of HBU, UNO, and UIW were questionable? Didn't mention any of the WACs instability.

At least GCU's athletic department was coming off of back to back seasons of winning the Learfield Director's Cup for D2 when they joined the WAC. Cal Baptist athletics were a Top 5 Learfield finisher last season, and are currently first place in the standings. Tarleton State, on the other hand, is ranked 116th in those same standings. 116 of 240 schools

Let's stop the silliness of suggesting Tarleton State would bring a quality athletics program to the table. They barely rank in the top half of D2. Let's be honest about what Tarleton State is: A barely warm body for the WAC. That's it.
