Have you watched the 2018 Winter Olympics? Curling is a sport, so frisbee might qualify as well.

You're on .... I'll bring Mitch Daniels and an old gold and black Frisbee!

? (Supposed to be a thumbs up ... maybe Dr. Rowe can teach me how to do that)

Does that mean Mitch is responsible to buy rounds of boiler makers at the Leafe afterwards? I believe that is the sworn duty of all Purdue presidents.

I chuckle thinking about how interesting it would be to drink shots at a bar with 2 University presidents and Jim Comey.

She seems progressive, but I'm going with Mrs Clause.

New W&M President
I haven't heard a single person trash her. I think pointing out that she didn't mention Tribe Athletics (saying she likes to win or frickin frisbee isn't the same thing) is a valid thing to mention. Instead of reading poetry, she could've mentioned JL's history at the college, the importance of supporting student-athletes, or how sport plays into her vision. It would've taken 20 seconds and would've at least shown that athletics is on her mind. As it is, all I know is she likes Shakespeare, frisbee, and poetry. Naturally, she deserves an opportunity to show what she can do. No question. But, her background and 20 minute talk tells me she s all about diversity, liberal arts, and appeasing faculty. Not a thing in the world wrong with any of that but she left out an important part to me.

RE: New W&M President
I'll be honest ... this diversity push has consumed higher education, IMO. It was in the recent athletics survey, for goodness sakes. We all knew that this was coming (I'll duck ... fire away).

Biographically, this has all of the appearances of being a diversity hire.

Our new President has spent the last twenty years at two all-girls colleges with a known liberal orientation. Seriously?

Background-wise, there were no applicants from schools that teach boys and girls? No applicants from the Power 5, the non-power 5, or the G-5? Nobody from Virginia? Nobody from the South?

Never thought I'd see the day that W&M would pull from Smith College.

My gut tells me that we are heading straight for the Patriot.

Having said that-

I watched Dr. Rowe's acceptance speech. I am rooting for her as I really like her background as an historian (not intended to be snide as I was a history major). I liked the speech (for the most part), and I like her public speaking style.

Dr. Rowe is undoubtedly an impressive person, and must have really impressed the committee. I will rely on their judgment, and support the hire.

I am now Samantha Huge's biggest fan ... she didn't become AD to lead W&M to the Patriot.

The College is the dog and athletics (much as I love it) is only the tail, so I have no problem with her not mentioning Tribe athletics in opening remarks.

That said, I hope (as a matter of personal taste and preference, obviously) that her resume doesn't indicate that we're in for Gene Nichol 2.0. For me, one of Taylor Reveley's greatest accomplishments was healing the division that Nichol left in his wake.

I don't agree with everything you say NJ but you've expressed my concerns here far more eloquently than I could have.

RE: New W&M President
I will say, if they value input from that athletics survey, I'm pretty sure the bulk of the returns didn't list qualities that steer us towards the Patriot as a desired goal. Listening to responses here and my own athletic survey point towards a majority wanting to align closer with higher profile academic schools. If reports of Huge's ambition are accurate, I would hope she would be in the ear of the president.

RE: New W&M President
Growing athletic support is not in conflict with anything related to the academic profile of the College.

I'm sure we would all be unhappy if athletics was the priority for the new president. She can "set it and forget it" and leave athletics to Huge (providing presidential level support as necessary), if she desires.

Coming from the Power 5 or the South or a coed school does not make you a better presidential candidate. And being a woman does not mean you are an inferior candidate, or a "diversity hire."

Smith is definitely not the school I want W&M to emulate. Who knows maybe she'll surprise me and push athletics (not ultimate ******* frisbee)

Particularly since many of us wouldn't have been able to attend Smith as undergrads, since we are male.

How do you have diversity in a school without guys, or am I missing something?

RE: New W&M President
Like several of you, my knee-jerk reaction is that Rowe will not place a high priority on athletics given her background. If we were judging books by their cover, I would have thought hiring an ex-division 1 P5 and professional basketball player as AD would have been the ticket to growth for our men's basketball program - turns out, that wasn't the case. Here's hoping that as things unfold, we have a president that shares at least a fraction of same passion for athletics as many on this board possess. Anyone have a Shakespeare line to share in honor of the hire? I've seen them tossed around at other times on this board...

That quote would indicate njalum thinks she's an inferior candidate. Also, nobody says "diversity hire" as a compliment.

It seems to me that most people here are willing to wait and see at worst, but what you said isn't correct.
