Carleton undergrad. Harvard grad school. Professor at Bryn Mawr in English Department. Provost at Smith. Lover of ultimate frisbee. The good news is when she closes the football program in a few years to start a Quidditch team, they will be able to play in the Zable Frisbee Stadium. Going out on a limb here, but guessing the priority of an academic progressive liberal will not be increasing spending on the basketball program.

What is critical, I think, is that a college president in 2018 must be a fundraiser first and foremost. I see no evidence that this woman has any background being a rainmaker. And this is a problem regardless of her stance toward college athletics.

I certainly like the things she said, but it really comes down to how she leads and what she accomplishes. It's easy to look great and say the right things at a press conference. The test will be how she stands against stress, conflict, & adversity.

Drop football, convert Zable to club quidditch with no school funding, and send all football funding to the basketball programs - I'm in!!

In all seriousness, lot of conclusions being jumped to here with no hard evidence whatsoever...

"During her tenure at Bryn Mawr, Rowe has been individually or collaboratively responsible for more than $900,000 in grant funding." (from the link that Tribal provided in Post # 15).

I must've missed her statement about fundraising.

New W&M President
That tenure period is over 16 years....resume attempt to check the box. Maybe the consensus is that the For the Bold campaign structure and goals are on firm footing/support and will move along without primary presidential focus.

Like any new leadership, in a few years, we could feel very fortunate she's here, or, mutually agree it wasn't a good fit. We'll see. Would imagine this is a popular choice with faculty.

RE: New W&M President
Being a co-founder of Carleton's ultimate team and Boston's ultimate organization is like founding Alabama football, then graduating and starting the Steelers. The level of commitment those achievements show towards athletics is a good sign.

Beyond that, who really knows. She's coming from private universities that match up with our academic profile.

Initial reaction: bad hire.

Smith is definitely not the school I want W&M to emulate. Who knows maybe she'll surprise me and push athletics (not ultimate ******* frisbee)

From Rector Stottlemyer's email that just went out to the W&M community: "She was also part of the leadership team that broke national fundraising records for women’s colleges."

The job announcement that went out was heavy on fundraising, so I have to assume that the selection committee and BOV gave that aspect a lot of scrutiny. Personally, I think it remains to be seen how she feels about athletics but I am not super hopeful on that front. I hope I'm wrong.

This article does quote some fundraising success...she "broke national fundraising records for women’s colleges."

I wouldnt say this is good news for athletics, but its yet to be seen. Good news would have been someone who was in a similar position at Stanford, Michigan etc.

I think she is smart enough to understand what W&M needs ($$$$$). If we have enough of $$$$$, everything will be solved including athletics.

I think she will do very well. I absolutely refuse to trash anyone more than 4 months before they even take the job. I also have some faith in the BOV and the current administration of the hire and choose to trust their judgment rather than speculate. It is a historic day to have named the first Female President of the College.

I remind some of you that Ms. Huge was blasted as a hire within mere minutes of her announcement as well. Fortunately, most people also gave her a chance and she appears to be doing well. Remember how W&M shaped you as well as how you shaped it. Not everyone turns out to be a failure just because you don't you know them. Give Dr. Rowe and her family the same chance and meet her first.

RE: New W&M President
I thought she did mention the importance of sports and that she likes and expects to win. She did also mention intramurals in the same breath as Varsity sports which makes me think she values sport - but may not be keen on expanding our football/basketball profile. I think she meant it more in regards to sports being important for the growth of a liberal arts student.

I'll give some time and let deeds dictate my thoughts on the hire.

She also stressed that she is big on collaboration and input. She has her experience and history, but she is also trying to integrate into an entirely different place. I think she will be wide open on improvements but also brings a younger, more tech savvy, mindset to the office. Whether it works out satisfactory, I'm not sure. I do believe she will work with the board, alumni, and students to put W&M on the best course possible.

Funnily enough I play club frisbee here.

I know many have not heard of Carleton College, but it genuinely is an ultimate frisbee powerhouse. The men's and women's teams combine for 10 national championships (The series didn't even start until the 1980s). They're a competitive team that likes to win, and recieve some pretty heavy funding from the school. I'm confident she knows/cares about sports
