So would this be the amount a power 5 type school would have to pay ETSU?
Reading the contract, it seems pretty clear that the buyout is a one-time payment of $500,000.
Anyway, that's my layman's take.

That is the way I'm reading it as well, but the other is much better.

Obviously we still have the tournament to go, but how does this regular season ending hurt Forbes stock for a power 5 school?

Maybe some but if ETSU wins the tournament it will be forgotten by outsiders.
I think with all that is coming out teams are going to want someone who is squeaky clean right now. Fair or not, they may tie him to Pearl. We will see.

Just looking at the incentives in the contract, the 3 game skid which cost them the conference title cost Forbes $10,000.

Much as Forbes has accomplished, and could still potentially accomplish, despite this past disappointing week, even if he does get the team back in gear and wins in Asheville, personally I wouldn't be surprised if he was still here next year. Even Murry Bartow after managing to get the team in the NCAA Tournament two years in a row in 2009 and 2010 didn't get any major offers. Way back in the day, Alan LeForce didn't get any major offers or move, this despite even having a first round upset win on his resume.
I'm also curious to see how this FBI investigation plays out and what if any sanctions the NCAA decides to hand down as well. Or for that matter, when the NCAA hands down any punishments or sanctions. If it's something that isn't done until after the season in a few months or so down the road, it's not going to mean anything.
OTOH, if in the near future, before the brackets for the NCAA and NIT are set, if they where to decide to slap half a dozen teams with post season bans, I wonder if this might see a few conferences that would traditionally only get at most one or two NCAA/NIT bids might pick up another bid.
