Judge: Christian baker cannot be forced to make same-sex wedding cake
A temporary victory but hopefully this means we have reached a point where people are willing to acknowledge that there are two sets of people with rights in these situations.

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/judge-...dding-cake

Quote:Kern County Superior Court Judge David Lampe denied the state of California a temporary restraining order last Thursday against Cathy Miller, a cake artist and owner of Tastries Bakery, to forbid her “from selling to anyone any item they are unwilling to sell.”

So Basically the state of California tried to use a restraining order banning the baker from selling any wedding cakes because they would not service a gay wedding.

But it gets better.

Quote:Last August, a lesbian couple approached Miller for a cake tasting at her bakery. Court records show say the couple was married December 7, 2016, more than six months before approaching Tastries to inquire about a wedding cake.

Even though she could personally not she offered to help the couple.

Quote:Miller let the women know that designing a custom cake to celebrate a same-sex “marriage” violated her religious beliefs about marriage. She told the local ABC affiliate in August she offered to help set up an appointment for them with a friend’s bakery – actually a competitor – whom she said did great work.

Quote:The attorney did not respond to the ABC station’s question as to why they were asking for a gay wedding cake in August after having been married in December of last year.

RE: Judge: Christian baker cannot be forced to make same-sex wedding cake
From the OP:

Quote:"We’re Christian, we love everyone,” she said. “God created everyone - we love everyone.”

“But there’s certain things that violate my conscience,” Miller continued. “And my conscience will not allow me to participate in things that I feel are wrong. And most of what’s based on is scripture. I don’t feel as though I should be picked on because of my beliefs.”

Her faith is what guides her life, she said, and she wants to run her business in accord with that.

“I also believe businesses owners should not be forced to provide services that conflict with their own sincerely-held beliefs,” Miller stated.

Her intention was never to hurt anyone, she said, but there are just some cakes she is unwilling to make. These also include cakes associated with drugs or drunkenness and divorce cakes.

To this courageous, honest, patriot and to Judge Lampe: 04-bow Protecting the religious freedom for everyone!

RE: Judge: Christian baker cannot be forced to make same-sex wedding cake
Show me a Christian baker who will refuse to do a cake for someone who has been divorced for a reason other than adultery or refuse to do a cake for the wedding of a Christian marrying a non-Christian and I'll have some sympathy.

For the life of me, I don't know why anyone would WANT a cake from someone who tells you they don't want to do the cake (same reason I remain pleasant no matter how awful the service is, I don't anger people who mess with my food).

But please baking a cake is not an ENDORSEMENT of what the people are doing. Selling sheets to a prostitute isn't endorsing her work, selling a bill counting machine to a meth cooker isn't an endorsement of what he does and selling electricity and water service isn't an endorsement of a marijuana dispensary.

For one Winston, this isn't Oceania. Neither Big Brother nor you get to decide what violates a citizen's personal religious beliefs. Let's let the Supremes weigh in.

It's not about the cake

Wrong old chap.
People tried the religious belief argument in claiming they couldn't be forced to serve blacks in their restaurant.

It seems pretty obvious these are SJWs with a cause trying to provoke a confrontation given that they were married 6 months prior........got to force their wants one everyone.

If I were the baker and they wanted to force the issue, I'd probably just be a d_ck and make them a really, really sh_itty cake that tasted crappy as well. That way, I didn't deny them service...

With that said, that stuff isn't a big deal for me....

There are several problems with this statement

1) Divorce is not extrabiblical, abuse would also count
2) A christian is not compelled by the bible to marry only a christian (they are advised to, but it's not a sin)
3) People are not asking these bakers to make a "happy divorce cake"
4) Many of these bakers and florist have had gay customers they just won't do a gay wedding.

IOW your comparison is silly and irrelevant.

Quote:For the life of me, I don't know why anyone would WANT a cake from someone who tells you they don't want to do the cake (same reason I remain pleasant no matter how awful the service is, I don't anger people who mess with my food).

Power, they want it for the power, to force people who have religious views opposing their marriage to bow down. It's why this couple did this six months after being married and it's why a couple getting married in MA found a baker in Colorado to target. This is about legally establishing their right to someone else's services over the providers right to worship as they please.

Quote:But please baking a cake is not an ENDORSEMENT of what the people are doing.

If we're talking a square store cake then you're right. But weding cake, like photography etc... is *ART* and setting things up is a participatory role in the ceremony.

Quote:Selling sheets to a prostitute isn't endorsing her work

No but sowing sheets specifically for her which say "welcome 1000th customer" *IS* endorsing her work.

Quote:selling electricity and water service isn't an endorsement of a marijuana dispensary.

No but setting up the hydroponics system for them *IS* an endorsement. And, by the way, if you sell something to someone and you know that it will be used in the commission of a crime you are culpable in the eyes of the law.

I think so too..but..We do not know the details. I had a friend that eloped with his fiance. Several months later they had a wedding party...including a cake. Possible that they got married in front of a bureaucrat and later had a wedding party.

These accommodation laws need to be done away with. They are a relic from an era long over.

Have you been married or remember your wedding? A wedding cake basically has to be delivered to the site and set up. So the baker is participating in the ceremony. Its not like selling cupcakes off the shelf.

I actually agree it is not an ENDORSEMENT.

However, since we live in a free country, the baker is free to have a different opinion than us. And, we have no right to force the baker to agree with us.

There are tons of LGBT friendly businesses that will serve you and deserve the money of a gay couple.

This is a weird one though if we think on a broader scale. There is a direct conflict between the Bill of Rights and anti discrimination policy.

I think it would be illegal for a government to pass discriminatory laws. That's what we had at one time.

By the same token, it should probably be illegal for groups of people to conspire to deny services or products to other groups. More like a racketeering type of legislation.

But one business making its own policy? I think that is a freedom of association issue as well. They should be able to do whatever they want, but that is not the world we live in.
