California considering mileage tax

How would you enforce and collect on this without literally tracking every mile on every car

If they start tracking every car. They will only be tracking them as they leave the state.

Classic bait and switch by government. The gas tax was used as the incentive to move to high fuel efficiency and electric cars. Now that California sees the change to lower energy using cars, they want to change the rules.

Electric cars are not lower energy vehicles much if at all. Electric production and distribution is very inefficient. Electric cars do reduce emissions locally though, and instead pollutes the Arizona desert where much of the power where power for CA is produced, greatly increases pollution from Lithium/Cobalt/Graphite mining and refining areas, and place more demands on Nat gas shale production.

Coastal Cali doesn't care about their own inland residents why would they care about our of State residents and their quality of life

That sounds like a supreme court case waiting to happen

Can a state government track your car agaisnt your will for the purpose of taxation?

It's easy if you already have car inspections in your state. I'm sure California does.

Illegal immigrants should be given the cars of people that fail to pay

I guess that's one way to do it.

But that would be one big lump sum and those types of taxes generally anger the public, even in a place like CA

The way the article sounds was they wanted this to be a monthly thing

These are the same idiots who created 'road diets' across LA to shrink four lane roads to two as a way to 'encourage' people to use the bike lanes they built. Sigh...

Well, that's how they justify the gas taxes. But let's face it: The purpose of the gas tax is to raise revenue. If that revenue source declines, or doesn't increase at the required rate, another revenue source is needed. Jerry likes to brag about his balanced budgets but we have > $200B in unfunded pension liability, and it's growing...

Actually, it makes sense, from an economic point of view. Use more roads, pay more of the cost of their upkeep.

When all cars used gasoline, then a gas tax pretty much was used as a proxy. But in an era with electric cars, there are a lot of free riders.

I figured the right wingers would love something that is used to remove a benefit of gas using automobiles.

And if they do that, they'll be doing exactly what they're calling conservatives and Trump supporters "racist" for wanting: A wall. (But an invisible one, much like the invisible box a mime -- and only a mime -- would be "encased" in.)
