The strongest selling point is the opportunity to turn around a long-suffering program and make a name for yourself as a coach. That means we unload what little dump truck of cash we have on a rising assistant or FCS HC who has bigger aspirations than coaching in the MAC. If they succeed, we enjoy it (everyone enjoyed 2012, right?), the coach moves on and we hire someone else with their eyes set on moving up. We had the opportunity to build on a once in a lifetime season but decided to go with a coach whose dream job was coaching at Kent and you see where that got us. We need a succession of motivated coaches to produce a string of success before we settle on a "career" coach.
This argument never holds. There are approximately 10 programs in the country where a successful coach is exempt from being pursued. Nick Sabin was bought by LSU from Mich. St. Wisconsin lost Bielema to Arkansas. Oka. St with Boone Pickens $$$, is being pursued by Tenn. Imagine Fla St losing their coach to Tex. AM as it is being discussed. I say bring on a coach that will only be here for 3 years because he does a magnificent job. Just have a good buy out penalty. We will have no problem with a lack of interested candidates.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Last two coaches to have winning records at KSU were Glen Mason and Darrell Hazell.
Both came from being assistants at Ohio State.
But both only stayed two years, too.
You need an Ohio guy who has experience as HC successfully rebuilding program(s).

The fault as someone earlier pointed out is that Kent was/is in the midst of its annual five-and-out plan when it comes to hiring/firing head football coaches.
Crum redshirt his entire first two classes ... and played those first two years with the suspect recruiting left behind by Mason (absolutly no linemen recruited, all skill positions) then compounded it with hiring Cordelli after that. ... Kent FB has not been able to solidify itself since.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Warriner sounds like he would be a good choice. As for Dick Crum, I feel foolish debating him at this point in time. I'll give you that he redshirted his first two classes and that Mason left him nothing but some good skill position players. but he was 2-9 his third year. Yeah, he should have been given a couple more years, but they were 1-10 and 2-9 the next two years, so unless that is all on Cordelli, Crum's recruiting was sub-par. I don't know, and it doesn't really matter now. I just hope the next guy, Warriner or whoever, can give me a reason to drive all the way to Kent for competitive games.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Warriner would be an interesting candidate. It would be really nice to see an offense worth watching. Also, he has recent ties to two big ten schools which could net us some nice transfers.
OSU will have a QB battle next year and if Saturday is any indication redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins is currently the leading candidate. They have another freshman redshirting this year that could be in the picture too. So that could leave redshirt sophomore Joe Burrow as the odd man out. If he doesn't win the job he could end up as a graduate transfer the next year and he spent two years with Warriner.
Then there's Minnesota who had a sophomore and senior QB split the season ahead of four freshman QBs. You can bet all 4 of those freshmen won't play out their careers with Minnesota.

I wonder how much he was involved in play calling at any of his stops. Also curious as to why he left OSU for Minn.

He was "made available" after Ohio State's 31-0 playoff loss.

If his health has recovered - try to get Gary Pinkel out of retirement.

So with that mentality, why not these names:
Previous MAC Coaches: Butch Jones, Brady Hoke, Al Golden, Darrell Hazell
Power 5 Coaches w/ Midwest Connection: Les Miles, Bret Bielema, Todd Graham, Bo Pelini
I agree lets go after a coach with previous experience...I like all your choices. Don't think we have a chance with Bielema, Miles or Hazell. I think might Pelini would be a good, BUT would he come?

Mostly pipe dreams... but I could realistically see a Butch Jones, Brady Hoke or Al Golden reboot (a name I failed to mention earlier.. Turner Gill? anyone?); and would fully support all of those choices.
As for Pelini, I bet he's shooting for the stars with a Power 5 job. No reason for him to make a stop off at a Mid-Major. The Risk/Reward at Kent State is too high. He's better off staying at YSU and succeeding until a Power 5 comes calling.
But since this is a forum and crazy ideas are encouraged... I've been hoping/dreaming for Les Miles since LSU fired him. How fun & exciting would that be. A successful, national champion head coach, and charismatic personality who knows how to talk football and not "blow smoke". Who also grew up in the area. Could you imagine.... Les Miles vs Frank Solich vs Terry Bowden. Anyway.... that's my dream.

Brady Hoke may end up like Dick Crum...Turner Gill is sitting good at Liberty (i think...) and they're going FBS by 2019...Butch has had success in the MAC so please come BACK lol

I would be shocked if Bo Pelini left YSU for Kent. He's being paid $2,000,000 by Nebraska to coach in his hometown which offers minimal pressure at most. I understand he has a tremendous relationship with his superiors there and has a very long leash.
The only name I have heard surface is former Kent State DC, Jon Heacock.

A coach with OSU ties, like Warriner, may be a good strategy. It worked with Mason and Hazell, but not Haynes. Could help with in-state recruiting.

If I'm wrong, everyone can remind me of it. We will not hire anyone with significant head coaching experience. We'll hire a position coach from a P5 school. Not saying this is a bad move, but I can't think of any good reason for a veteran head coach to come here.

RE: Coaching Candidates
Sam Houston and James Madison both won today to move to the FCS Quarterfinals. JMU winning was never in doubt while SHSU was up 41-14 at halftime then South Dakota roard back to bring it within two in the fourth quarter. SHSU scored 10 straight to put the game away. Defense was none existent with SHSU racking up 708 yards and SD 637 combining for 1345 yards. It took Kent five games to reach that total both to start the season and to start the conference schedule.
