RE: Theoretically Only...
I am a let it play out type of guy but if CTS whiffs on Tyler Harris, I'm going to lean more to the cut ties with him crowd. Gary Williams was a very good coach, but just like Coach Smith, he didn't want to do what was necessary to land the top notch talent that was in his backyard at Maryland.
This led to him having to coach up average players in a very competitive league, the ACC. He was eventually fired and to my knowledge, has never been a head coach again. College basketball recruiting never ends, and Coach Smith's insistence on retaining a staff that can't recruit will bury him. I've never given up on a coach quickly, but I'm beginning to see that Smith is not a fit for Memphis and after this season, hopefully the money people will pull the plug on this coaching tenure. I don't think that he even believes in the potential of this program, even though we've been successful in the past in every decade, he thinks that we, the fan base, aims to high, our expectations are to great.
But on the other hand, even though Parrish is critical of Smith, it wasn't very long ago that he was ridiculing the fan base for thinking that we had a shot at a Greg Marshall or even a Buzz Williams, because we aren't who we think we are. All that I know is that it almost sickens me seeing the state of recruiting, and the talent level. I am grateful for the young men that want to wear Tiger Blue, but not one of them would be a rotation player on past Tiger teams.

The Lawsons quit on the team during the the late season, and as a result several more guys quit too when the going got tough. To hell with the Lawsons.
Nothing against you snowtiger...just not fond of how they left us hanging.
Except they were still playing at a high level. Tubby quit on the team during the late season and just let other teams run all over us.

And, after hearing multiple sources of input, I guess the answer in part is that ideally, players would choose their school based on personal preference. And, ideally speaking, coaches would be paid on their current success, and not on their past success. I'm o.k. with someone who follows my original philosophy, but not at $3 million + a year.

there is a difference in playing at a high level, and filling up a stat sheet.

You are correct, sir.
A good analogy is comparing an individual in a work-group who is a solid performer but can't get along with co-workers vs. another solid performer who is a great team player/moral booster.
Leadership in a team environment is severely lacking in the Lawson clan...and it showed up in spades at the end of last season when the epic beatdowns and subsequent mass exit occurred.

Now I know how the anti CJP people hear when I make excuses for him or bring up solid points about him . . . but it can't be as bad as saying someone who almost averaged a double double in what should have been his fr year was over hyped. We would kill to have someone on the team who can do what D Lawson can do. I guess so would Kansas.
