The California NAACP Calling National Anthem Lyrics Racist, Anti-Black
Want to Get Rid of It
Quote:SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The California NAACP is pushing to get rid of the national anthem that they’re calling racist and anti-black.
“This song is wrong; it shouldn’t have been there, we didn’t have it ’til 1931, so it won’t kill us if it goes away,” said the organization’s president Alice Huffman.
Colin Kaepernick started the NFL protests, which quickly spread to bring attention to systemic racial injustice in the country. But Huffman says Kaepernick’s message was lost when it turned into a debate about the flag.
“The message got distorted, the real intentions got overlooked, it became something that’s dividing us, and I’m looking for something to bring us back together,” she said.
Huffman adds that the protests did lead her to look at the lyrics of the “Star Spangled Banner” especially the parts of the anthem we don’t typically sing.
“It’s racist; it doesn’t represent our community, it’s anti-black,” she said.

Wow! I never knew the War of 1812 was fought in 1931. Frances Scott Key would be surprised.

The poem "The star spangled banner" was adopted as our national anthem on March 3rd 1931 by congress and signed into law by Pres. Hoover.

But we've "had" the song for a lot longer. And its been a national song, even if not official, for a lot longer. A person speaking for a group should learn to speak clearly. But then you can't expect that from someone getting offended by the national anthem.

I think we need to go with a party song. Something that people cannot resist singing and dancing along to, no matter their color, creed, gender choice, or preferred aroma therapist.

I think we've mentioned this is the next phase.
Don't forget that ol' pesky constitution is racist, too.
If we intellectually accept that confederate artifacts need to be removed from the public square due to racism, then you have to accept the argument against any federal artifact that could be called racist.
It's coming. We can't say we were caught unaware.

Lets replace it with 60 seconds of silence. Because any suggestions or creations for a replacement will have its detractors and if one person does not like it then it should not be the national anthem.

I thought ISIS and Al-Qaeda were the only organized groups that seek to destroy cultural/national history they find offensive. Wait, this is in California.....

RE: The California NAACP Calling National Anthem Lyrics Racist, Anti-Black
Here's the "controversial" third verse of the Star-Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key:
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Now then, please keep in mind this was written during the War of 1812. During the war, the British were known to bring in mercenaries (the Hessians) to fight the Americans, just like they did during the American Revolution. In addition, the "slave" that Key writes about actually refers to any American sailor who was captured and forced to serve on British warships. In other words, any American who was forced to fight against his homeland.
Racist? Nope. Not in the least. The NAACP completely misses the mark...again.

This could also refer to the 4,0000 escaped slaves fought for the British Royal Navy in exchange for their freedom. The Corps of Colonial Marines took part in the burning of Washington, fought in the Battle of Baltimore and up and down the coast. After the war these troops settled in Nova Scotia and Trinidad.
All this being said, I don't give a shyte about any of that. I am firmly against any attempts to erase this country's history, culture, anthems, etc.
