RE: Official Game Thread: #10 Wofford (L 24-31)
The BUCS will not challenge for a SoCon Championship or a playoff berth with the current offensive scheme.
IMO, BUCS need new OC.
Every facet of the football team has improved except the run game and play calling. Yes the defense and punting game need to improve but they are progressing. The run game ( for almost three years ) has shown no improvement and the play calling is so predictable and conservative.
Bucs have a good pocket passer in Henrick, plenty of good receivers, RBs that have good resumes and an adequate line. What's missing? A good game plan.
Bucs average 2yds per rush, worst in SoCon. Bucs allow most sacks in SoCon. What do these two have in common. When a team can't run and are in predictable pass situations, blitz is coming. When Bucs run the ball almost exclusively on 1st and 2nd down, opposing defense load the box and stuffs the play. RB has no where to run.
If you where in the stands Sat. You saw Wofford put 7 in the box on 1st and 2nd downs. They only rushed three and had 8 in zone coverage on 3rd down. They gambled that the Bucs would run twice and then throw. They were right. Game film doesn't lie.
Why do the Bucs never change play when they see what defense is doing?
Where is short passing game, where is screen game, where is pitch play to RBs, where is checkdowns to RBs, where is mis-direction play, where is pass to RB'S in flat? Where is anything other than off tackle twice and run for your life on third down pass play.
The few times the Bucs passed on 1st down, they got good yardage. They threw 1 screen pass, good for 11 yds, threw once to TE on 1st down, good for 12 yds. Why not call these plays more often.
Henrick and the offense could easily pass for 350 to 400 yds per game, plus by throwing on any down, especially 1st down, defenses would have to play honest, that would help the run game and the Bucs would have a much better chance to win. Bucs could be leading in the 4th quarter instead of frantically trying to catch up.
The fans that sit around me were most vocal about the play calling. Some were actually yelling at the coaches, especially when the Bucs continued to run the same no gain off tackle play. 33 RUNS FOR A NET OF 15 YRDS. Why run same play 10 times if it doesn't work, let alone 33 times. Why do the same thing over and over and expect a different result?
Come on OC, open up the playbook, give the Bucs a fair shot at winning.
