A rivalry game should require a premium ticket price and should cause visiting fans to travel. A ticket to the NC State game in Death Valley costs the same price as a ticket to the Syracuse game and NC State could bring all of heir fans in two tour buses.

As a WMU fan, I agree. UT is definitely a name that WMU fans wake up to outside of Central Michigan. They - not CMU or NIU - are often regarded as the wall having to knock-down to get the Championships. I wish it was recognized as a 'rivalry.' Michigan/Minnesota have a rivalry trophy (in regards to the Big 10, which match-ups don't have a rivalry is the big question), no reason WMU/UT shouldn't.

But yah, it's not in the same category as WMU/CMU.

They're mandatory? Like US law?

It's not a federal law, but it is implicit in the CINC trophy requirements.

To have played AFA every year since the early '70s, Army and Navy must care about the trophy, and thus their games with AFA. Navy in particular must care, now that 8 of their games are devoted to AAC opponents and they're still scheduling AFA. Army did the same during its time in C-USA. And AFA must care, especially since they've been in a conference so long but are willing to use up two OOC games every year to play schools on the Atlantic coast. So I think both rivalries with AFA qualify as essential, even if not especially heated.

I second this. Makes no sense to list Toledo/Bowling Green and Miami/Ohio as Essential, and then list WMU/CMU as Essential? with a ?

I'm just asking because I'm unsure. This isn't meant to offend any fans of the teams in question.

Probably a one-sided rivalry. But, I wouldn't consider Clemson & NC State rivals. To me, Clemson's rivals are South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and FSU. You have a dormant rivalry with my Dawgs.
NC State's rivals are: UNC, East Carolina, and Wake Forest.

OK, but I'll note that of 42 voters at the moment, only 9 have chosen CMU/WMU.

RE: Essential FBS Rivalries? (Poll #1)
I suppose it depends on the definition of essential.

To me, essential are those rivalries who either define a conference, define a region, or have such a history as to make them important.

First tier would be something like:

Alabama/Auburn
Michigan/tOSU
TX/OK
USC/UCLA
Army/Navy

Then you'd be talking:

USC/ND
FSU/The U
Cal/Stanford
Ole Miss/Miss St
OK/OSU
BYU/Utah
Pitt/WVU
GA/Fla
Mich/Mich St.
Wisc/Minn
Ala/Tenn

I'm sure there are others as well, but if we're talking essential......

There was a 10 year stretch, but we have played 111 times.

In the OP, I did define "essential" for the purposes of this poll, but I suspect that many voters have interpreted differently. Maybe they are considering whether it's essential in any of the ways you describe; to one team or the other (but not both); to them personally -- I dunno.

All the matchups you mention could reasonably be considered essential IMO except for Pitt/WVU, which abruptly ended after 2011 when WVU joined the Big 12. It clearly has not been important enough to either or both teams to play since then. They do have games scheduled for 2022-25, so we'll have to see then whether or not it returns to essential status. A 9-year gap in play doesn't bode well for the rivalry.

BYU/Utah is a little shaky because of their recent voluntary 2-year lapse in scheduling one another, but has resumed and is scheduled out to 2022 at least.

Probably going to have to redo these polls at some point and make it more obvious what I'm looking for.

I would consider the 10-year gap from 1996-2005 to be significant, as well as the 2-year gap from 2008-09, given how recent they were. As soon as the two teams went to different conferences after 1995, they stopped playing. If the Big 12 collapses in the next few years and both teams end up in different conferences, is it likely that they would continue to play in an annual OOC game?

It was only considered "voluntary" from the Ewetes' AD and head coach perspectives. Utah scheduled a 2-game series with Michigan and those two didn't want another tough OOC game before conference play.

I personally know some big Ewete donors who were pretty furious with AD Chris Hill for the lapse. This rivalry has all the essential elements - proximity, fan bases living and working together, common to have divided allegiances within the same family, fantastic history of competitive games and highlights, vitriol, pranks, HUGE game in the region - it also includes the extra religious and social elements not found in any other rivalry, topped off with the superiority and inferiority complexes caused in both fan bases by realignment.

The lapse was technically only one year because the teams met in the 2015 Las Vegas Bowl.

There's a lot of choices and the max is only 15. 15/42 = 13.64 9/42 = 9.1

That would argue that none of the matchups here are essential rivalries. In any case, I think I'll need to redo these polls later with a more explicit definition of essential.

You got too many in question so are getting a wild spread. People in the midwest don't care for the Bama/Tennessee rivalry (which is itself overshadowed by Bama/Auburn), and people in the northwest don't care for Baylor/Texas Tech, for example. The 'other' option isn't helping either. Also, while all of these are true rivalries, none of them are 'clear-cut' like UofMich/theOhioSt, Bama/Auburn, etc.

It's a great thread idea, but you're gonna get a lot of different answers.
