Students rode out Andrew in the Dorms at U Miami.
"Freshman orientation was supposed to begin at the University of Miami on Aug. 24, the day Hurricane Andrew smashed through the area. At the university's main campus in Coral Gables, the winds shattered windows, tore off roofs, uprooted trees and stranded more than 4,000 students and their families inside dormitories. The university's buildings were not damaged structurally, but for a few days the students and their families were without regular food or water.
"Those people who were on campus have survived, and our spirits are high," said Edward T. Foote 2d, university president.
While damage is being repaired and the campus cleaned up, most students have returned home. The semester will end as scheduled on Dec. 18, but examinations will not be given until after the Christmas holiday, university officials said.
University of Miami students were moved to the bottom first six floors of the university's 12-story dormitories. When the winds were at their strongest, people were brought into meeting rooms and common areas away from exploding windows. "
