He was also great at using jet sweeps, bubble screens, and fake bubble/go routes. Sterlin Gilbert's offense is a pile of garbage so far. It's not Mack and Adams gone it's the offense. Zero creativity. Taggart would have kept this thing humming.
I have been buying in to the Mack/Adams narrative but you are changing my mind.
I think is a combination of things
1 Mack and Adams. No one has stepped up and played to that type of performance yet. Johnson and Valdes- Scanling that were expected to take over haven't been anywhere near as consistent and dominant as they need to be.
2. The play calling has been abysmal, trying to run up the middle most of time as a power running team has not developed and doubt we have the people to do that now but we keep forcing it. Long pass plays for Q that force him to stay in pocket while teams are blitzing also doesn't play into what our talent can do right now
It will be interesting to see if the coaching adapts and uses what we have now or keep pushing what they want but haven't got the talent to do
That's the $64 question. Clearly, we're not that good right now, we've been fortunate to play really bad opponents. That will change soon enough, so we need to improve soon enough.
Joking?
Unless Temple drastically improves, USF won't play anyone with a pulse until November 4. And that's assuming Houston will be good again which is a TBD
The remaining OOC is as terrible as the first half

If we continue to call the same type of offense that we have run the past two games, ANyONE on our schedule has a chance to beat us.
As I said the question will be whether the coaching staff realizes before we lose one, that thus team is not build to run the power run / downfield passing, pro style offense they want to force the players to run.
Had they continued to run the spread read option style with bubble screens and WR jet sweeps that we ran last couple of years we would had blown out our first two opponnents

Gilbert's offense works but for pass first QBs that you find plenty of in Texas and California
It's not a fit for a run first to get in rhythm QB like Flowers

I really hate to be the pessimist... but college teams, both coaches and players, don't really change from week to week. This team struggled for a quarter against a weak MWC team, and struggled almost the entire game against a weak FCS team. Looks like the losses of Mack, Adams and others are going to hurt, and there will be a year or so of adjustment needed for Strong... IF he ends up being the guy.
Remember Tag struggled, and likely would have been fired if we had not been still paying Holtz. But he was the guy to eventally spin Mack, Adams and Flowers into agrubly the best offense in college football. He won 11 games and a bowl even with a sub par defense.
Strong may be the guy eventually, and he can surely recruit, but this season I bet we win 6-8 games tops. The offense, especially the line, is the obvious concern. Six or more wins will be through the grace of a very weak schedule.

We're still going to win more than 8 games by the simple fact that Flowers is still the best player on the field in virtually every game we play. He will bust loose at some point, regardless of offense, due to sheer athletic ability. That said, thoughts of a NY6 bowl and an undefeated season are now out the window, unless this offense finds it's rhythm, and fast. At this point, I would say we are still a decent 9-10 win team as is, given the schedule. But we were expecting a special season, not decent.
Hoping the bad stretches we have seen were an aberration. Every year, some FCS team plays decent against some power program that goes on to have a great year. Stony brook has had a top 5 FCS defense on more than one occasion, and I believe had the #1 FCS defense a couple years ago (what I read somewhere).
Heck, in 2007, we barely beat Elon, the sky was falling, then went on to beat Auburn, North Carolina, and West Virginia enroute to a temporary #2 ranking.

i disagree on the 6-8 games.... i said this during the game:
usf isnt anywhere remotely as good as anyone thought they are but will likley still accomplish what most people thought they would..
usf has some huge weaknesses but your schedule is just as weak
unknown houston is the only team that has the defensive prowess to likely compete with usf and they are still unknown
.. navy and memphis are the 2 conference teams that can out score them...but you avoid them
usf isnt a top 25 caliber team but will finish top 25. like i said earlier im just worried that when usf gets to a bowl game like ny6 and play a legit team, they dont get blown out

Charlie Strong is a good "culture" guy... decent recruiter, players seem to like him. But he's never struck me as a top-notch X's and O's coach. I think Teddy Bridgewater covered up for a lot of Strong's deficiencies as an offensive mind. We just have to hope his offensive staff has the wherewithal to utilize their personnel better than they have thus far.
I still think they win 9-10 games with their weak schedule, but I'm not convinced they are the favorites to win the conference anymore.
