Oh wait, they have that product. It's cable/ satellite/ fiberoptic. You cord cutters can rationalize whatever inferior, jerry-rigged product(s) you come up with while I'll sit on my couch and have what I need when I need it.

I kid a little- I get the fun of being creative and figuring out how to "take it to the (cable) man". But I really do value ease and convenience and will pay extra for it.
Lol. I have worked in IT for 20 plus years. I don't have some jumble of cables in my rooms. I have a Roku box that fits in n the palm of my hand connected by 2 FT long cable to my TV. It's WiFi. I have not used my home phone to make a voice call in maybe 6 years. I have a smartphone. I pay $50 for phone and Internet. And I watch what I want when I want, not according to someone else's schedule. I do not even need a DVR. So that is LESS devices not more. I bought a Blu Ray player 7 years ago and it was gathering dust. It's now in a closet I think.

Every time this subject comes up people come out of the woodwork in protest. I have no idea why. Maybe it's fear of the future. The generation between age 13 and 25 does not even watch TV ...at all. You're going to hate them. Everything they watch is ok n their phone and occasionally a tablet. TV networks better hope their current viewership lives to be 400, because otherwise their model is hosed.

No need to get haughty. Just giving my opinion. I get the idea of "cutting the cord" works for some. If it was just me and I didn't have a big family with varied viewing needs, I'd probably consider it more. For me, I don't want to worry about the hassle, and I am willing to pay for convenience.

Let me make this analogy. A lot of people eat a significant number of meals out instead of eating at home or bringing your lunch to work. It's convenient, accessible, sometimes fun. You'd save a lot of money eating nearly every meal at home. But you don't because it is convenient and you can order exactly what you want when you want.

For me, my fiberoptic package is convenient, easy and I don't have to worry about missing my team or show. It's akin to eating out for my screen appetite. It's all about where you want to spend your money.
Cool

Then can I continue not having cable? LOL

Panama, pray tell:

1) What channels do you get, specifically sports channels?

2) What method do you use to get them?

3) What is the monthly total cost?

Thanks. 04-cheers

He can answer on his own, but I'll give you an answer

Year round:
FS1
FS2
NBCsn
NFLnetwork

September 1 - December 30
the above plus
ESPN
ESPN2
ESPN3

And when the NCAA BB tournament rolls around we also have TruTv and TBS

For tv alone we use Sling. We pay $24 for most of the year. That goes up to $40 during FB season and we can cancel anytime. Drop it for a month, pick it back up later. We can take it with us and we get 2 devices playing at one time, never been an issue.

Include internet (which all of you who still have cable also pay for) and our bill is $84 for most of the year, $100 for part of the year. And as I have stated before, since I work from home as a consultant, a portion of my internet bill (and electricity, water, gas and cell phone) is tax deductible.

My family are not big TV watchers. We get the Fox channels for year around soccer (Premier, Bundesliga, MLS, Champions and FA Cup) and my son likes Cartoon Network. If we want movies, we use Amazon. We don't pay for premium channels because they aren't worth it. I have never watched Game of Thrones and likely never well. We get our local channels free, over the air (we also get Discovery free over the air). We miss nothing, if we want to watch a movie we use Amazon which we have a Prime subscription because other then groceries, we buy everything online.

Oh, and if a game is on a channel I don't get, big freaking deal. I can go to a bar or miss it. My life won't end. My family prefers to spend a lot of time outside, we live in the mountains, sitting in front of a tv all day and night every weekend is a waste of time and it makes people fat.
So from next week in all the sports that Sling offers on Orange and Blue package. I will keep thag $38.99 until Feb. Then go back down to just the $25 Orange package.

Thanks. My issue would be that my wife has very different viewing habits. Couldn't care less about ESPN, but loves the trashy girls shows on channels like Bravo and TLC, and she also needs the shopping channels like QVC. Also, she likes the news channels - CNN and FOX. Are those channels accessible?

Bottom line for me is that I pay $180 a month year-round for cable and internet (COX). $12 a month of that is HBO because we do love Game of Thrones and other HBO original shows. I also pay $10 a month for Netflix, so it's really $190 all told.

I can do that, but it is pretty much my limit, and they are constantly trying to push my bill up to $200, have to fight them on that every few months, LOL, threaten to switch to ATT or DirectTV.

The more players that enter the game the greater the possibility of satisfying both you and your wife at half that price or less.

If you don't mind sharing, how much of that is the actual bundle, how much fees/taxes?

Guessing your bundle is ~$140-150, and then some fees for hardware/HD/DVR ?

Unlikely.

The carriage model and carriage fees work exactly the same as with cable/sat. In other words, each network/channel that you add to a bundle makes the cost of the bundle go up $X/customer. That's just how that works. So if the bundles were the same size, the cost would be the same (minus fees for hardware).

You obviously don’t know how it works so let me enlighten you: The G-Box Q and other similar boxes come with Kodi and add-ons that allow someone to see practically any movie, sports channels including PPV, news channels, etc… from around the world for free! It does have flaws… like certain add-ons might stop working or links to a sporting event might not work. However, other add-ons eventually replace those that stop working. It also works on a phone or tablet without the box.

It's not free it's pirating illegal content.

Exactly ... that's why "certain add-ons might stop working" ... the rights owner catches up with the feed and gets it shut down.

Guessing your bundle is ~$140-150, and then some fees for hardware/HD/DVR ?

Pretty much. Looking at last month's bill:

TV total was $141, internet was $67, and then they take off $40 for a "bundle discount" which brings me down to $168, then $9 in local taxes brings it up to $177, what I paid.

Of that $141 for TV, $26 was for rent on our 3 HD cable boxes. There was also included in there something called a "regional sports fee" for $3.50, LOL.

FWIW, the sports channels i get are:

All the ESPN channels except the Spanish channel
All the pro channels (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, Golf, Tennis channels)
CBSSN
NBCSN
FS1 and FS2
FSN and FSN2 (two regional Texas/Louisiana channels)
FCS Atlantic, Pacific, and Central
SECN and SECN2
LongHorn

Also, there is a local OTA station, channel 16, that shows college football games. They get G5 games, including the occasional AAC game.

I do not get the BTN or PAC Networks. The SECN is bundled automatically in my area but you have to pay extra for BTN and PAC. And I don't get any additional pay networks like NFL Redzone. I do not get BEIN1 or BEIN2. Those are all available, i just choose not to buy them for extra.

And no, I do NOT specifically pay for the LongHorn network, it comes in some bundle i get, LOL. Here in Louisiana, they assume we care about Texas, so we get a lot of Texas stuff. I could watch any Astros or Rangers games i want if i wanted to, they air those like they are our home teams. Ditto for Rockets games during the NBA season. Likewise, the NFL shows us Texans and Cowboys games all the freaking time.

Basically, this lineup is excellent for me during college football season, because so many games are on. I can just veg-out for 13 or so hours flipping among 3-4 games that are on all day long.

I will say that last year, for the first time, i missed having the BTN, because they actually put some good games on the BTN last year whereas previously it was always garbage games.

I paid $138 for a 32 inch smart tv with built in services (Roku) I didn't need to buy another fire stick for it. It's wonderful; the quality is better and it scanned & picked up 55 free channels before I even started with the Roku channels and my $8 Netflix account. I cannot understand why anyone would have Direct tv or Comcast anymore? Obsolete services for obsolete technology. I hope the AAC starts up a digital platform and doesn't re up with cable (espn).---That's becoming obsolete at a rapid rate. For those who still pay more for less....why? Just curious. I'm not a technical guy at all BTW. If I figured this out, I'm certain others have.

Get the G-Box Q (fully loaded) which makes a smart tv, Roku, Netflix, and cable obsolete....
Seems like another set top box or dongle.

It's free for me....

If you don't mind sharing, how much of that is the actual bundle, how much fees/taxes?

Guessing your bundle is ~$140-150, and then some fees for hardware/HD/DVR ?

About the cost for a fully loaded G-Box Q with no monthly bill... ever.....

That's an impressive service package you have there! Plus, in my humble opinion, having dedicated hardware makes the viewing experience better, especially if you're constantly flipping channels. But that's just me. Some people claim they get a completely equivalent experience with Sling or VUE app on a Roku.

Splitting the discount evenly, looks like effective price of $47 for internet, which is about right IMO. Guessing you get pretty decent service there as well, maybe 50-100 Mbit?

Thanks for sharing

Sure, if you advocate stealing content.

No content is free, other than OTA (which doesn't require any such "G box"). Therefore, you are a thief. 07-coffee3

For those who don't know, these "too good to be true" "free" TV services are illegal. They're equivalent to what Napster was before they got sued into oblivion.
