RE: Buy game at Purdue?
I'm not a fan of this. But the explanation makes sense. We needed a road game and a P5 game. The return wouldn't work until 2024. Who knows if we would even want the return then. So I get it. As long as it's not one a year, there will be no ramifications. We aren't suddenly going to be lumped in with the likes of So Illini for one buy game. Others are not going to shy away from scheduling us over one buy game.

What are the purposes of home games? To make money and increase your chance of winning. This game accomplishes the first objective, and it's still pretty decent on the second objective. It's just not at home.

I know, said that in the other thread. I'm calling BYU a P5 since the Big 10 calls BYU and Notre Dame P5s for scheduling purposes. And BYU has their own ESPN contract, so think it's fair to call them P5.

The current administration has decided that it is in our best interest to play one P5 school per year. Let's see how it works out.

ND is. They have their own route laid out for the playoffs, are affiliated with the ACC, and have a YUGE tv contract.

BYU does not and is not. Not sure why the B10 did it that way - probably some political concession. But they are not.

Disagree. Political concession? For that huge Mormon caucus in Big 10 states? Give me a break. And I think most would say, as the Big 10 does, that BYU is a P5 level team. ESPN just extended their contract with BYU, and BYU gets around $1M per home game from ESPN.

If the Tigers were able to schedule a home-and-home with BYU, I guarantee you our fans level would consider it a P5 level series. As they should.

The political concession is just a theory, but don't downplay clout. OTOH, they did get run out of Illinois. Probably something else - I just don't know what. It's not logical based on anything else. Performance? Maybe tv ratings.

And don't get me wrong. I'd take a H-H with them. And they do well financially with the whole LDS backing and all.

Maybe it's just the way we define P5. To me, that classification goes back to the BCS and the coalition to get the big bowl games. That's when we started using the P6 term. BYU was not in that. That then morphed into the playoffs and the P5. And again, BYU has no route to the playoffs any better than we do; in fact it's probably more difficult for them without the possibility for a 13th game. So with no realistic shot at a NC, they are not P5.

Not how I would define a P5 level team. But BYU did win a national championship since the 80s, which is more than about 80% of the teams in the P5 conferences can say.

They are an independent who averages 60K per season with their own ESPN TV contract. I'd say, and the Big 10 agrees, that makes them P5 level.

Notre Dame is all but ACC and is part of the P5 voting bloc.

BYU is neither P5 nor G5.

Big Ten only calls them P5 for schefuling purposes because some of them had existing future games with them. They also call Cincy P5 for the exact same reason.

BYU can schedule whom they want but their path to an Access NY6 bowl is virtually impossible.

Actually it isn't much (West Lafayette) & I went to UM. But a win over Purdue & $750K check is better than beating Mercer.........

Just poking some fun at West Lala. I knew good friends from Purdue. Cheered a football game on their field. Nothing to write home about.

I'll try and go just to see us kick Purdue Pete in the teeth. Of course I don't make plans that far in advance.
