Exclamation Buy game at Purdue?
According to this article we're playing a buy game at Purdue in 2020 for a meer $750k. Any insight on the validity of this?

I do not know the validity, but I know today's Tiger team would likely crush Purdue.

RE: Buy game at Purdue?
"Purdue will host Memphis at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana on Sept. 12, 2020. The Boilermakers will pay the Tigers a $750,000 guarantee for the game, according to a copy of the contract.

The 2020 contest between Purdue and Memphis will be their first-ever on the gridiron."

This must be the Big 10 game Bowen was referencing in his Monday interview.

RE: Buy game at Purdue?
It would give us a chance to have 3 home nonconference games. With 2018 being right around the corner, in terms of the way future football scheduling works, I would guess that will get a 3rd home game against another G5 team, as opposed to a P5 team. Or perhaps they could move up the Missouri game currently set for 2023 (Missouri currently only has 3 nonconference games schedule for 2020, so it's a possibility).

So they are going to pay us 3 quarters of a million dollars for us to come up there and beat their ass?

I would assume they are paying us to not have the return game in the LB.

Ha! I thought this as well. In general, I'm not a fan of us having to play buy games, but if it's $750K + a win against a P5 team, then I'm okay with it! Would have rather had a home and home with them, but I could get on board with this. Better than taking a buy game against, say, Ohio State, for $1M + a loss, imo.

RE: Buy game at Purdue?
This make no sense---We are not going to play a non return game at Purdue, unless:

1- the market has just fallen out of the buy game market and Bowen is the only one who knows it.

2- Tom Bowen is the dumbest AD in Div 1a.

3- Purdue is paying a lot more than $750,000. Like double or more. even then it is highly unlikely.

Come to think about it, Bowen may owe the Purdue AD a favor. 05-stirthepot

There is no way this isn't a home and home. The market for pure buy games is basically double the $750k. I also seem to recall Bowen adamantly stating that we don't do buy games. We could probably get a buy game with Notre Dame for pete sakes.

Unfortunately, doesn't look like a home-and-home. Would be no reason for Purdue to pay us the $750K if it was. Indiana State only gets $500K in 2022.

"Copies of contracts for both games were obtained from Purdue University by FBSchedules.com via a public records request."

I'm not going to get mad until we confirm it, but if true and if it is a payoff to the Purdue AD for his contributions to the Memphis athletic department it is worth it. 05-stirthepot

I'm certainly no expert on the market for buy games but could you provide some examples of where schools are being paid $1.5M? I seem to recall some $1M buy game payments by maybe Alabama (or another top level P5) for a couple of late scheduled replacement games where the previously scheduled schools cancelled & also a Southern Miss game at Neb that had previously been scheduled at SM turned into a buy game at Neb for about $1M.

Sweet! Our oldest will graduate from Purdue by then but it's looking more and more like our youngest will be a student at Purdue in 2020. It will be fun going and watching the Tigers administer a beatdown on the Boilers.

It did say guaranteed $750k. Maybe there are provisions for it to be more than that. $750k & kick their ass reminds me of a scene from My Cousin Vinny. 03-nutkick

Yeah, I'm having trouble finding a downside too (maybe we took it on the cheap if the market is higher). Go beat Purdue & get $750K for doing so. Lot better than we'd ever see in our list of bowl games because the conference gets none of the $$$.

I see downside. Probably means we'll have one less home game that year. Not like Indiana is fertile recruiting ground for us. And, if we claim to be a relevant, top 40ish program, as we have been the last 3 years, you just don't do buy games anymore.

UT-Martin does buy games. Austin Peay does buy games. The University of Memphis shouldn't do buy games, IMO. If the AAC is going to brand itself as a P6 conference, then its members need to act the part.

And, if you insist on doing one, do it with a name program. We've gone to USC and Michigan in the past. But I don't think we should do that anymore, either.

We get UCLA to do a home-and-home, but do a buy game with Purdue? Makes no sense.

Guess that means that Bowen feels we are on the same level as Georgia State and inferior to Purdue.

The guy has orgasms over every P5 schools he talks too.

We NEVER should be a buy game for the likes of a middle to bottom of the pack P5 school.

You are not looking very hard. It relegates us back to the level of a buy game when it comes to P5 schools. Not worthy of consideration for a home and home.

That's about the 3rd time I have agreed with you in the last week. Something must be in the water.

And don't forget that we are going to Monroe, LA in 2019.

Just cries out inferiority.
