Another JMU football note to pass along: LB Gus Little has left the team. Little transferred from Maryland this past season. He started five games and made 37 tackles in 2017.
Ugh, what is with players leaving the program all of a sudden. Wasn't Gus Little at least a 2nd string LB last year and saw some decent playing time?
That's a big blow. Must not have liked the new hire today.
Unexpected for sure

Guessing the writing was on the wall in the playing time battle between him and Word. Thought both contributed a great deal this year. Best of luck in the future Gus.

Hey it is what it is and I thank him for his contributions, but at JMU you compete for playing time it is NOT given. Once on the practice field, pedigree does not matter. You earn what you get.
Best of luck to Gus.
On the positive side that opens up a scholly for a potential transfer.

I would hold off on speculation. There is no mention of transfer. Playing time decreased midseason after a concussion. Hopefully Gus is doing ok. Best wishes from JMU nation.

Right now only Johnson and Maloney full scholly?
Always a guessing game as to who is on full scholarship but I'd venture to say it's pretty few. Just based on twitter, you'd think a million guys would run out of the APC on a Saturday. They'll post that they got an "offer" from JMU but in most cases you look at who else was recruiting them and they have to either gotten a sliver of a partial or they're preferred walk-ons.
My educated guess is somewhere between 40 & 50 (or roughly 1/2) get a full ride each year out of 85 players. Then there's 10 more paying their way.
I agree with the 50 on full ride
Why would there be only 10 more paying their own way? There's more than 95 players. JMU has 107 listed under the 2017 roster, and that was after a couple of players were removed..
NC game notes NDSU about 110 (about 94 plus separately 26 redshirts). I remember 2016 they also had a big roster- don't remember exactly but was way over 100.
I used the 10 because at the start of camp FCS teams can only have 95 players on the roster.
That must not include redshirts..Could be wrong, but I didn’t think you typically had up to 15 walkons make/join the team after camp, or after camp starts.
Have looked & only links I found were the 63 schollies among 85 players but nothing about roster size except the 105 for IA.

There are scholarship limits and travel squad limits (65 for CAA games)
My understanding of the practice roster limit (105 FBS, 95 FCS) is that it only applies *prior* to the first day of class, and after that there is no real limit on number of walk-ons who may practice with the team.
Some teams (see Nebraska, Alabama, LSU) have absurd numbers of walk on practice roster sizes that can be in the 130-160 player range. Obviously many of those players never see the field, and won't get a real shot to play. They are still used for practice sessions and scout team purposes. It is said that most walk ons at big programs don't last more than a year after they realize they are used as tackling dummies.
For anyone who wants to read the NCAA phrasing on practice roster limits, its here on page 244/262: http://www.ncaapublications.com/productd...df#page262

MH transfers:
-Als (2 year starter, 2nd & 3rd team All CAA)
-Darrious Carter (2 year starter, 3rd team All CAA)
-Eldridge started 9 games.
-Little started the 1st 5 games.
-Marshall started 4 games.
Next season, barring injury, I think will be:
Likely starting:
-Darrious Carter
-Eldridge
-Rondell Carter
-Moye
-Word
Maybe starting:
-Marshall
-Terrell
-Dinucci
2 deep OL: Donahue
MH overall has done very well with P5 transfers..Unless I’m misremembering, only have had 2 busts, 1 at QB and 1 at OL, both of whom are no loner with the program. Sucks about Little. Maybe it was concussions.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. It is a loss but I think the LB room will be just fine. I think Word and Holloway are most likely the starters there anyway, with Matt Terrell playing the edge.
That's a big blow. Must not have liked the new hire today.

Yep. Starters look like Holloway, Word, + Maginely on the outside. According to Maginley's bio, he started 12 of 15 games. Course that OLB position, if I'm not mistaken, usually rotates with the 3rd/nickel corner, so isn't on the field a good chunk of the game. Mike Cobb, #38, listed as a safety, was on the 2 deep behind Maginely, & bio says 1 start at LB. As far as the 2 deep behind Holloway & Word, guess remains to be seen..

RE: 2018 FB Recruiting
Was this posted somewhre else? Stumbled across this from 4 months ago (2/19). FWIW:
“ FCS RECRUITING: Top 40 CAA Recruits
*How did we come up with our ranking list below? Simple -- it's subjective, but all recruiting rankings are that way. We combined 247Sports, Rivals, the players' offer lists and our own thoughts to come up with our version of the FCS recruiting rankings. We provide some of their other top offers in the charts. This is our third year doing this.
*We don't include junior college or 4-year school transfers in any of this work. This is strictly incoming high school graduates....”
https://herosports.com/fcs/recruiting-co...class-ajaj
By my count:
JMU: 9 (7 of the top 14)
VU: 6
UD: 4
SBU: 3
Elon:3
W&M: 3
URI: 3
UNH: 2
UR: 2
Maine: 2
TU: 2
Albany: 1
I realize this even more of a crapshoot that the IA recruit rankings, but it goes to show that JMU, in addition to the transfers is getting a lot of quality HS recruits.. As think stated earlier somewhere on here, of the 15 HS recruits, according to their recruit profiles, 12 had a I-A offer, 10 of them multiple I-A offers, 3 with a P5 offer)..
