For branding, they will likely want consistency and not want separate names for the school and the sports teams.

We used to be:
General: University of Connecticut
Sports: UConn

The school went with "UConn" for both the general name and the sports teams for consistency in branding. Personally, I think that was a mistake. If we still have the pipe dream of joining a league like the Big Ten someday, "The University of Connecticut" sounds much more academically respectable than "UConn". What we should have done is made everything officially the University of Connecticut and then let the fans and sports media continue to call it UConn as a nickname. Everyone knows that they are the same institution. The brand was already well established thanks to years of basketball success.

I agree, I think UConn should have stayed with Connecticut it sounds better and works for the Big Ten. The logo should have become a block 'C' similar to the other Big Ten logos. Noticed how Maryland joined and went to a block 'M' from the turtle.
UConn is similar to East Carolina as we are the only option if a P5 conference wants to go east. For the Big Ten the only have UConn, Buffalo, or West Virginia to choose from and UConn is the best fit. Same goes for the SEC if they want to go East it is either East Carolina or West Virginia, and it might be both. A school named 'Carolina' with 30,000+ students, with a large football stadium and fan base fits very well into the SEC mold.

You should have changed your team affiliation, at least temporarily, to pretend to be a team with a winning record against NGWOTFFNESWCSLHU before posting that advice.

Like Maryland maybe...

Don't think your opinion should count as you are an ACC fan (with a picture of Duke) and suppose to be an East Carolina alumni. I would assume Duke gets your support more then the pirates do.

The only directional school that isn't interested in condensed lettering it seems is South Florida, who I assume like to make America think they are located in south florida.

There's a USF with the same exact colors as South Florida. It's a more accomplished program too. 05-stirthepot

Everyone in Texas says SMU and TCU. You rarely ever hear Southern Methodist or Texas Christian.

BTW, Cincy or Cinci?

Going by ECU Pirates tell people no idea where you are located and that an ECU is? Going by East Carolina tells people oh hey that school is located in the Carolinas. Which is great for us because people love visiting and living in the Carolinas and help us get out of state students. WE should rebrand as 'Carolina Pirates' for athletics and rename the university Carolina University of the East.

That should have been done decades ago. East Carolina it is. FTR, Carolina University is a very strong brand, even if confusion with North Carolina basketball would occur.

You think the name matters? 03-lmfao

The name matters that's why Memphis, Houston, Cincinnati will get taken first. They have brands.

No, they have better athletic programs, better markets, better recruiting grounds and better academics (except Memphis).

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a constant discomfort (think bad gas) and 10 being stabbing yourself in the thigh repeatedly with a dull #2 pencil. How much to hate yourself for being an ECU "fan?"

RE: "East Carolina" or "ECU"?
The whole "direction school" thing is a red herring. It has zero validity. You go with the name that gets you the most visibility and accompanies your marketing. For me East Carolina is a classy name, but it has more to do with the "Carolina" moniker. It is already a shortened version of North Carolina so it already has some additional flair.

It is different than UCF. Central Florida has no flair. UCF rolls off the tongue better and to me has more marketability. also UCF has worked hard to push this name rather than C. Florida.

I just got a survey, which I assume was sent to all alumni, asking about branding. The university is considering changing from "Tomorrow Starts Here" to something else ("This is where bulls run!" is my top recommendation, and it looks like they are also looking into the "East Carolina" vs. "ECU" topic.

One of the questions on the survey is...

"How would you rate your feelings about the following? The university being referred to as ECU (similar to schools like LSU, TCU, NYU, VCU, etc.)?"

So what say you Pirate Nation, fellow AAC fans, and visiting trolls?

I think "East Carolina" ought to go with "East Carolina." When "Central Florida" rebranded themselves with "UCF" it didn't really stop anyone from calling them "Central Florida."

I think you are wrong on this point. More people now refer to UCF as "UCF" than ever before. Especially in Florida where now nobody calls it Central Florida. It takes time and investment to make the brand work, especially nationally. It takes exposure. "East Carolina" has a nice ring to it. Simple and clean.
