And that's built on the work of the 60's-->90's... Intersectionalism has been tearing it down ever since. I don't think we are balkanized, I think we are moving that way, especially with the college aged kids.

Think about the campus life which produced our current adults. The ones who have a more diverse group of friends. Did you have riots on campus over speech issues when you were in school? did you have calls to *implement* segregated dorms?

Quote:Do you view people who do not look like you differently than your parents?

Honestly no.... My parents worked and were friends with people of all colors, nationalities, ..... It's a lie to assume that the parents of the 70's and 80's were racists.

I'm not assuming that they are racists. 95% of my dad's friends look like him, he's not racist. 30-40% of my friends look like me. We are engaging all the time with new people that aren't like us. I believe that this will continue as the Internet makes the world get smaller. Sure there are people that will still segregate themselves, but I think that number is getting less not more.

mfw you think it's about another group's "looks"

I don't see why people actually want to fight this.

When you ostracize yourself why would I want to prevent your from doing that?

It would cost the U too much and you just can't give in to demands. The students who demand this should start their own groups and hang out or something.

UCHICAGO UNITED CORE DEMANDS
We demand that The University of Chicago formally recognize all Greek organizations active on the University of Chicago campus as Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).
We demand the creation of a University funded and run cultural houses, specifically a Black House, a Latinx House, and an Asian House that stand independent of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. These houses shall function similarly to The Center for Identity + Inclusion but will focus on the specified community.
We demand a Race and Ethnic Studies Department as well as an increased budget for programming carried out through the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture.
We demand that the University hire more faculty of color.
That a permanent Advisory Committee be established in each division of two (2) faculty members, two (2) graduate students, and two (2) undergraduate students for the purposes of holding the University and departments accountable to diversifying its faculty and class offerings.
That at least one (1) faculty member, one (1) graduate student, and one (1) undergraduate student be a person of color (POC).
We demand the diversification of the Core Curriculum through the following measures:
Establish a new “Diversity and Inclusion” graduation requirement starting from the Class of 2022 that can be fulfilled by any CORE sequence or CRES class that is primarily focused on any US-centric structural oppression, such as race, gender, and sexuality.
Expand the Social Science and Humanities Core Curriculums to include more insight from Black authors, specifically Black women.
Offer a Humanities and/or Social Science Core sequence on the works of the Islamic Golden Age and the important connection it makes to Western thought.
Create a Caribbean civilization sequence.
Create a Southeast Asian Civilizations sequence, or at least two (2) classes per year on Southeast Asia.
We demand more direct involvement of our organizations with the planning and implementation of programming for prospective and incoming students. Specifically, we demand an involved role in the Destination UChicago Fly-in Program and the creation of a Pre-Orientation program specifically for incoming students of color.
We demand increased funding for the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, its staff, and its grants fund.
We demand a revitalization of the Bias Response Team in the following ways:
Expand funding for the Bias Response Team’s capacity and marketing.
Hire individuals with the specific responsibility of running the Bias Response Team.
Introduce marginalized student representation to the Bias Response Team.
Build infrastructure for transparent disciplinary processes against faculty and staff who are reported to the Bias Response Team.
We demand that the university keep the 1970 Disciplinary System for Disruptive Conduct for the time being and suspend the faculty senate vote on the Picker Report.
We demand that UChicago United be involved in the fulfillment of these listed demands.
The Organization of Latin American Students demands the University of Chicago:
Introduce infrastructure to allow individual students and University community members to file complaints against groups and organizations on campus.
Place limits and/or restrictions on the funding allotted to student organizations that are accused and/or found guilty of discriminatory behavior.
File a complaint against this FIJI chapter to their national headquarters.
The Organization of Black Students demands the University of Chicago:
Hire more Black faculty and staff, specifically in the following departments:
Academic Departments throughout The College
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and more generally The Center for Identity + Inclusion
The College Housing Department; including Resident Assistants, Resident Heads, and Resident Masters
Student Counseling Services
Establish a Black Studies Academic Department and undergraduate major program that stands independent of the Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies Department.
Expand the Social Science and Humanities Core Curriculums to include more insight from Black authors, specifically Black women.
Does more intentional recruitment of Black students from the Chicagoland area.
Establish an opt-in Black Housing Option for Black students in College Housing.
Require a comprehensive in-person training for all Housing Staff that addresses how to handle situations of racial bias, discrimination, or prejudice.
Expand funding for Student Health Services to reestablish drop-in hours and open the office on weekends.
Establish a Community Engagement Oversight Committee for the University’s reference. The committee should be composed of exclusively Black people from surrounding communities and neighborhoods. The committee should provide insight for the President’s Office, the Provost’s Office, Office of Civic Engagement.
Dissolve the Center for Identity + Inclusion so that the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, The Office of LGBTQ+ Student Life, and The Office of Student Services each have their own physical space, staff, and funding.
The African Caribbean Student Association demands the University of Chicago:
Create an African Studies Department and undergraduate major and minor program staffed with faculty from the African diaspora
Classes must not only center on colonial Africa but the current political climate of different African countries, pre- and post-colonial Africa, African writings, philosophy and literature, etc.
Create a Caribbean Studies Department and undergraduate major and minor program separate from the Latin American Studies Department and staffed with faculty from the Caribbean diaspora
Classes must not only center on the colonial Caribbean but the current political climate of different Caribbean countries, pre- and post-colonial Caribbean, Caribbean writings, philosophy and literature, etc.
Create a UChicago Center for African and Caribbean studies.
Hire more staff of African and Caribbean heritage within the:
Undergraduate and graduate academic programs
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
Student Counseling Services
Create more UChicago affiliated study abroad opportunities in Africa and the Caribbean, including:
The establishment of UChicago Led sequences as well as year long study abroad programs with African and Caribbean universities
Study abroad programs should reflect the wide range of academic study available in Africa and the Caribbean
Meaning the development of courses focused on the humanities as well as the sciences, mathematics, and other traditionally white dominated fields
Create more African and Caribbean course programming throughout different academic departments
This includes diversification of the core curriculum to include authors and prominent thinkers of the African and Caribbean diaspora in both humanities and social science classes
Emphasizing the inclusion of more African and Caribbean language courses besides the current two: Swahili and Haitian Kreyol
The inclusion of more courses in the LAS major that focus on the influence of the African Diaspora in Latin America.
The Arab Student Association demands the University of Chicago:
Provide dedicated advisors for the Middle Eastern student population.
Increase the number of Arab/Middle Eastern faculty throughout academic disciplines.
Change the name of the Oriental Institute.
The PanAsia Solidarity Coalition demands the University of Chicago:
Increase the number of Asian or Asian American faculty to the Social Sciences and Humanities departments.
Add one (1) short-answer question to course evaluations for students to comment on the degree of diversity and inclusion in both the coursework and the class environment.
Release of an annual report detailing the number of minority faculty members in each department, number of minority graduate students teaching classes, and the number of minority students in each of the schools, and the number of CRES and Gender Studies classes offered that year.
Institutionalize an Asian American Studies program established under CRES.
Ensure at least three (3) classes offered every quarter as part of the program.
Ensure at least one (1) of the classes per quarter be focused on a non-East Asian American group.
Ensure at least one (1) of the classes offered in the Autumn quarter be an Intro to Asian American Studies class.
Ensure at least one (1) of the classes offered each year focus on South Asia.
Ensure at least one (1) of the classes offered each year focus on Southeast Asia.
Hire at least one (1) culturally competent Asian American counselor to work at Student Health and Counseling.
That there be a counselor specifically for racial counseling.
The Movimiento Estudantil Chicanx de Aztlán (MEChA) de UChicago demands the University of Chicago:
Create a Latinx Affairs Office and a Latinx Cultural House. These institutions would cater to the needs of non-international and undocumented Latinx students while working in tandem with Student Support Services.
Create a Race and Ethnic Studies Department as well as increase the budget for programming carried out through the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture. Further, we demand that the University hire more non-international Latinx faculty and offer more Latinx Studies classes.
Increase in the size of Student Counseling Services and the completion of multicultural sensitivity training for all counselors.
Institute of a pre-orientation program aimed specifically towards students of color. This program would familiarize students with campus resources and multicultural registered student organizations. Further, this program would ease the transition to the university’s campus climate and academic demands.
Recognize all fraternities active on the University of Chicago campus as Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). Additionally, we demand that the university pursue disciplinary actions towards all individuals guilty of racist, hateful, and discriminatory conduct.
Increase the recruitment and admission of non-international and undocumented latinx students. This would also entail full financial, legal, and mental health resources for undocumented students.
Include MEChA de UChicago in the implementation of all of the above demands.

Some real winners in those demands:

Quote:Meaning the development of courses focused on the humanities as well as the sciences, mathematics, and other traditionally white dominated fields

Higher learning has been a white tradition for thousands of years. Whites in monasteries preserved the knowledge until whites at universities could share it with other whites. So for anybody else to go to college and learn about "sciences, math and other traditionally white dominated fields" is cultural appropriation and it’s gotta to stop.

Quote:Place limits and/or restrictions on the funding allotted to student organizations that are accused and/or found guilty of discriminatory behavior.

That whole inconvenient "innocent until proven guilty" thingy getting in the way of a righteous behavior-control.

Quote:Increase the recruitment and admission of non-international and undocumented latinx students. This would also entail full financial, legal, and mental health resources for undocumented students.

Sure, be easier to round them all up when they are on a list.

Shockingly, they didn’t demand a dorm for white people.

Quote:A University of Chicago student organization has released a list of nearly 50 demands calling for the creation of at least six separate racially-themed academic departments.

According to a copy of the demands obtained by Campus Reform, a coalition of student groups known as “UChicago United” has called for the establishment of a “Race and Ethnic Studies Department,” a “Black Studies Academic Department,” an “African Studies Department,” a “Caribbean Studies Department,” an “Asian American Studies Program,” plus a “Center for African and Caribbean Studies” and a “Latinx Affairs Office,” all of which would exist independently but receive funding from the university.

The ultimatum also asks for a set of “university-funded and run cultural houses, specifically a Black House, a Latinx House, and an Asian House,” before turning its attention to the school’s core curriculum, demanding “a new ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ graduation requirement” that would be “primarily focused on any US-centric structural oppression, such as race, gender, and sexuality.”

Additionally, the document twice calls for “the creation of a pre-orientation program specifically for incoming students of color,” which would “familiarize students with campus resources and multicultural registered student organizations” while easing “the transition to the university’s campus climate and academic demands.”

http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=9211

U of C is private. Public Troy University has a special high end dorm with special benefits for evangelicals. Those opposed by evangelicals don't get some special dorm.

And Troy is a public university. Which is worse?

Except thats not true.

Really, is U of C somehow a public institution? Is Troy somehow private? Did Troy build an on campus dorm with a Chapel in it and staff it with anti-Gay preachers for the sole benefit of the anti-Gay religious students? Its called Newman Hall.
