PS- Houston and his staff are on their way to making JMU football great. Only one season but what a way to start!

As BP mentioned, his legacy is influenced by the handful of times he "struck lightning". Take out the 2004 and 2008 seasons and MM was 3-29 against playoff teams. Sure, those are #alternativefacts, BUT 3-29!!!! How do you keep a straight face when you say he was "able to motivate and strategize how to beat ranked teams"?? Especially given that a handful of those games were with playoff berths on the line. W&M slept on us, VT slept on us, teams in 2004 slept on us; it wasn't superior coaching that won those games.

Most wins by JMU HC? Cool, but the other coaches had an average tenure of 4 seasons; not the 14 seasons that MM had to accumulate wins. And not to jump into the what if game but EW was a Vad Lee injury away from being a National Coach of the Year.

MM was a very good, and for maybe one more season, the greatest coach for JMU, but saying he is "superior" is a little ridiculous.

Yeah, take out his two greatest seasons. And the fact MM was not only loyal, but EARNED the right to his extended tenure as a HC.

Do you realize how absurd your post reads? I seriously hope you didn't sprain anything twisting around to spin your story.

Now, name the other FCS coaches who received 2 national COY awards, or do we have to remove those from our consideration of MM's heritage as well?

The self-loathing and need to denigrate our own is legendary on this board. It's pathetic.

DDD gave facts. "Absurd"???

Cherry-picked "facts"

MM did many good things but it is pretty clear that firing him was a good move for JMUs football program. '04, '08 & '16 are the three best seasons in JMU history. Two of those are while MM was our head coach. Still, I always felt he was the beneficiary of the job he had rather than the one that made JMU football great.

This wasn't a discussion about the merits of retaining MM. It's a discussion about MM's merits and tenure as the HC at JMU.

Your last sentence made me laugh. The reason JMU FB is on the map, and you're enjoying your seats in BFS, is because of MM. There is no Withers and there is no Houston without MM's tenure as HC.

Based on the length of this thread I expect to see a lot of Dukes in Lynchburg for the opener next year.

I appreciate your loyalty to MM. You obviously think a lot of him. While I respect you and your opinions, I just can't agree. 15 years at JMU and '04-'08 were the only years of significance. Yes, MM made JMU football better after Alex Woods but he flamed out. Withers was 18-6 with MM players. That says a lot.

I'm no huge MM supporter....but I also remember Alex Wood.

I have to agree with Longhorn on this one--MM did a lot to help push JMU forward, but his positive impact ran dry at the end, and there's no shame in that--sometimes you just need to hear the message in a different voice, and it was time for MM to move on. EW bumped us forward for a year, and Houston has been great for the cause as well. Looking back on the past 20 years of football, we're on a different level of competitiveness than we were at that time.

The band has always been #1 though.

RE: LU opens 2018 season in Lynchburg with ODU
MM was "able to motivate and strategize how to beat ranked teams." Umm, actually he won less than 1/3 of his games against playoff bound teams*. "Cherry-picked facts." AHAHA okay bud.

I stepped away the cold hard facts to apply some critical thinking /common sense. As one could argue that both Rodney and Rascati made MM look like a better coach than he really was I took those years out (and many on here make that argument with EW being a sub .500 coach without Vad Lee bailing him out). As such, I took away those two years. I also took them away as the prior point, which I quoted, was that MM was just "good" and happened to strike lighting a couple years, skewing people's perception. Anyways, after removing those years I stated that MM was 3-29 against playoff teams. I then went ahead and removed two negative "outliers," which aren't statistically outliers, leaving MM with a 11.5% win rate against playoff teams. But sure "Cherry-picked facts" even though ~30% win rate still proves said point beyond reasonable doubt.

Perhaps I should quote someone.....
Quote:Critical thinking requires more than just being "sure of our preconceived notions," however, it requires the ability to step back from our existing beliefs and consider new information that may directly contradict our deeply held positions.

Oh wait, that was you!

*Okay, not technically ranked teams but I'm sure the number is comparable and I don't have time to figure it out exactly.

We'll make sure to save you guys some seats in our national championship game in January.
Never mind, we'll sell out our allotment.
But please, save us an entire section. It's kind of sad that you don't have enough faith in your fan base to sell out your share that you are willing to give us some.

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd rather see JMU play Nobody State than attend an ODU @ LU game.

Then enjoy your games. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a member of the CAA and playing FCS. And you can expect some poking from ODU and LU fans while remaining FCS and they play a FBS schedule. And the LU/ODU game will be standing room only and it's will set an attendance record at LU, that will be broken as higher profile FBS teams coming to Lynchburg.

You are correct, there is nothing wring with being the CAA*

* If the athletic budget is less than $10M
* If the school does not have a $75M football stadium
* If the school is not building an $88M basketball arena.
* If the school does not have a new baseball facility
* if the school does not have a new soccer facility
* if the school does not have a proven and thriving fan base

JMU is all of these things without the branding and alum relationships which is what matters.

No problem. We'll paint a few of our port-a-potty's purple so you guys will feel right at home.

UVA playing ODU + Liberty + W&M (+ VT obviously) just in the 2019 season alone... and JMU never.

+ UR in 2018 + VMI in 2020... seems like UVA is only scared to play one program in Virginia.

I wouldn't play us either if I were them.... especially now. They would get absolutely stomped by us.
Even Tech is afraid to play us now. It gives me a lot of happiness every time I wear my JMU gear in Blacksburg.... which I do every chance I get.

UVA hasn't played an FCS program outside of WM/UR/VMI since we last played them in 1983. They only play those three FCS teams due to "history".

This has been said thousands of times at this point. It's pretty clear what they're doing.

You'd think they would want to try to eliminate the "history" of them losing to us, but whatever... no skin off my @$$

We beat them in 1982 and they won in 1983 the following year.
