I have sympathy for his family as this whole thing is obviously something they didn't choose.

Well, he "was" a thug there's no ifs about it but it's sad really. With so much money and fame to go and commit those crimes and thinking he was above the law was asinine to begin with. Dumb shite, he brought this on himself that's the sad part.

You have a constitutional right to aid in your appeal. Since he can't, the conviction is vacated and his family can collect the insurance on the voiding of his contract.

I believe he did this because of the exemption mentioned above, meaning that people might not be able to sue his estate.
