Magic unicorns pooping dollars would probably poll better.

Things that require 60 votes you will never get can poll whatever they want and it will still make no difference because you aren't going to get 60 votes.

Exactly. Saying a straight repeal is what you want is great, but can't be done under the reconciliation rules that allow them to pass it with 51 votes. The house can pass a straight repeal every week for eternity and it doesn't matter it's getting filibustered.

Explaining the reconciliation process

RE: Trump going after Freedom Caucus
I'm hearing this talk about replacing FC people and I wonder with whom? Demoncrats? So they'll replace a Rep who might vote for a Republican bill with someone who definitely will NOT EVER vote for a Rep. bill. Is that smart? Regardless of their unwillingness to engage Reps they still are Republicans and that's an entirely different animal from the Schumer-Pelosi type of thinkers.

The FC is pretty small. It's about 10%-15% of the GOP congress critters. I think, if you can't work with them, than the moderate republicans will suffer more damage than the FC.

After Obergfell and Casey (the affirmation and parsing of Roe), what social issues are really left?

Social conservatives keep bashing their head on backdoor restrictions to abortion (like Texas tries time after time after time), but at a national level there truly are no 'social issues' left.

You aren't woke if you think that. 03-wink

I really dont think that deciding who gets to pee in which bathroom is anywhere near the stature of gay marriage and abortion. If it is of that import to the Republicans, then their goals are really low.....

Not the right that brings this stuff up. Don't know why people keep blaming the right for what the left does.

Its the 'right' that keeps voting restrictions in, and the 'right' that keeps overriding at a state level decisions made at a local level; so they *do* keep bringing it up.....

So responding when the left pushes something is the right bringing it up. OK.

So you're another one who thinks the right should just seed all the social issues to the left and let them do as they please. They should just keep their opinions on the matters to themselves.

Up next: sex with children.

You gonna fight back or you gonna tell the right to shut up?

Not necessarily, but the 'right' tends to keep pulling it back into the spotlight --- kind of like that raccoon that keeps haunting my backyard.

I could understand if this was far more important than who pees where. My solution is just build a lot of stinking stalls with doors and have *anyone* pee where they want. Hotels etc. in the Bay Area are a great example of implementing that solution.

I *would* prefer to have my government (both Rs and Ds) put their attention to the real stuff that matters --- like the economy, the Norks, etc. as opposed to this issue. Look I typically vote Republican, but they are idiots for making this issue their Alamo. Just my opinion.

Quote:So you're another one who thinks the right should just seed all the social issues to the left and let them do as they please. They should just keep their opinions on the matters to themselves.

They have lost their proverbial shirts (rightly or wrongly) on same sex marriage and abortion. No offense, but those were kind of the biggies. It was stupid for the Republicans to fixate on these messages and detract from other positives that they bring to the table. But since they launched into those like a dog trying to get marrow from a bone, they have *earned* the moniker of the party of 'homophobia' and 'anti-women's rights'. Again not arguing whether the crux of the issues there that the opposite sides took are right or wrong, just that if afforded the oppty to label the Republicans in that manner. And the opposition did it in an amazingly effective manner. And the Republicans keep marching back to the fights, no, scratch that --- they are being led by the nose into even a stupider fight...... again just my opinion.

Quote:You gonna fight back or you gonna tell the right to shut up?

Prefer to fight a winnable topic. The topic is another loser for the Republicans.

accomplishing zero when looking for change and in command always results in zero (false)

was that better???

No. Ryancare was not substantially different from Obamacare. In fact, the CBO said it would not have done anything to reduce health care costs. By not voting on it, the dems still own this train wreak of a health care system.

you're missing the overall point....the point being when you have control, you push the agenda through to later achieve the overall goal of getting it right....once you own it early, it then becomes establishing a coalescing to accomplish what is 'best method'....it also then becomes being in a position of strength

the FC is whiffing the overall goal when their goal is to create change for what is right....they just lost Poe b/c of this

if one doesn't see it that way, then we'll have to agree to disagree in scope...

I'll use my chess metaphor again....sometimes you need to trade-off to gain the crown...

Oh I get your point, I just don't agree with it. Passing that steaming pile of poo called Ryancare would have placed it squarely in the shoulders of the GOP when the midterms hit. And its continued escalating costs would surely hurt republicans at the ballet boxes. Plus, if Ryancare would have passed, congress would have placed it on the back burner, and moved on to their pet projects. They would not have worked to further modify and fix it.

In case you didn't notice, the last election was a clear rebuke of the establishment party. All Trump really did by backing this weak establishment repeal, was align himself with the same swamp politicians he was sent to Washington to expose and run off. Shame on him.

I was quite disappointed in Poe for withdrawing from the Freedom Caucus. Midterms are won by the base that is more energized. The dem leadership is in mortal fear right now. Soros and the rest will be paying good money to buy protesters and bus dem voters to the various polls in the midterms. The Tea Party and those that lean towards the Freedom Caucus are far more engaged and likely to stir up votes in their district then establishment republicans. Poe will certainly face a Tea Party/Freedom Caucus challenge. And Poe will probably lose.

I have stated this in other posts... Texas is no longer a republican state, it is now a conservative state. We have purged our state of most of the establishment republicans. We have very conservative elected officials in most offices. Many won due to the backing of the Tea Party. There is a high likelihood that Poe will be replaced with a much more conservative individual.

RE: Trump going after Freedom Caucus
Boehner the naysayer: Former House Speaker John Boehner, in a Las Vegas speech last week, predicted that Republicans will "never" repeal and replace Obamacare, reports Robert Costa of the Washington Post. "It's been around too long," the Southwest Ohio Republican said. "And the American people have gotten accustomed to it. Governors have gotten accustomed to this Medicaid expansion, and so trying to pull it back is really not going to work."

Boehner said he believes that "when it's all said and done," the Obamacare employer mandate and individual mandate will be gone, but Medicaid expansion will remain. "The governors will have more control over their Medicaid populations and how to get them care, and a lot of Obamacare taxes will probably go," he added.

Boehner also warned that if Republicans fail to pass legislation on health care, taxes, and infrastructure, "they're going to get annihilated" in next year's midterm elections.

Boehner wasn't finished: He also ripped into U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Champaign County and other arch-conservative House members during the speech, calling them "the knucklehead caucus," according to the Columbus Dispatch's Jack Torry. Fielding a question about why some Republicans opposed electing House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy as House speaker, Boehner said: "Now these are the guys in the Republican Party you could call right of right. They are anarchists. They're for nothing."

it's become 20D chess now....

in nuts zongo's mind (that'd be me), one couldn't ask for a better solution following zeronuts tenure.....

Another chess metaphor. You don't always go for checkmate. Most of the time, you just want to win a pawn. That is more likely to lead to an eventual victory than a hell-bent all or nothing attack.
