2017-2018 Men's Basketball Schedule
Just saw that ODUBLITZ reports that we are "renewing our rivalry" with Norfolk State next year at the Scope. Don't have any details yet though. Anyone else know of any out of conference games next year?

Eh, I like the game. Probably not great for our RPI or resume or whatever, but fun for the fans and good for the city. I haven't seen us play at Scope as a younger fan, so would be a novelty for me.

Would rather play an exciting game versus the Spartans vs., say UMES or Delaware State. This is great for the area.

I really hope this is a one-off. If we are playing a game in Norfolk that is not in a tournament it needs to be at The Ted.

RE: 2017-2018 Men's Basketball Schedule
Our schedule should consist of:
Preseason tournament - 3 games - good enough tournament where at least 2/3 are top 100
VCU - usually top 50
George Mason - getting back to top 100
W&M - sometimes top 100
Richmond - usually top 100, sometimes top 50
JMU - not usually top 100, but easy travel and draws some fans
Another A10 opponent (URI, Dayton, St. Joe's, Davidson, GW) - often top 100, sometimes top 50
Power 5 game (even if we have to take money and travel to a UNC) - ususally top 50
2 bodybag games at the Ted (MEAC, Mt St Mary's, Longwood, Liberty, VMI)
This schedule on a good year gives us an opportunity to play 8 top 100 OOC games. If our team is good and we go 5-3 or 6-2, that is good enough to at least be in the bubble discussion if we don't crap the bed against FAU and UTSA.

I'm always a proponent of playing crosstown rivals whenever possible, presuming they're in the same NCAA classification. Maybe some of you are bothered by the optics of playing on a neutral site instead of at the Ted, but if ODU is the 600-pound gorilla of Hampton Roads basketball, then it should have no problem establishing home-court advantage by way of a larger fan turnout.

The only thing I am concerned about is this adding another bodybag game. If we have this plus our normal 2-3 at the Ted, the schudule is going to suck.

We ain't Duke folks. Play Norfolk State at SCOPE. It's something different, the place will be electric, unlike the TED, which is DEADSVILLE. We should do it EVERY YEAR and drop one or two of those examples listed by EverRespect as the kinda dreg bodybag games. I like his list of the VCU's and W$M and Richmond's etc.

Then that would be even worse because it will be perceived as a bodybag game, whether I underestimate them or not. They finished 2nd in conference this year with a 253 RPI. I'm fine with playing this game in lieu of one of the other bodybag games, but I have to think we could find someone better to play on a neutral court, especially considering JJ's job might be on the line next year.

Lets be real; rightly or wrongly, Jones' job will not be on the line next year. Maybe in the minds of fans, but certainly not in the minds of people that make the decision.

NSU would be the only team that ODU could play at the Scope and call it true neutral. Anyone else comes to Scope, it's home-neutral for ODU, which is why few if any teams of consequence would bother with it.
I do agree that I hope this takes away a poor game elsewhere on the schedule, though one of the consequences of doing that is one fewer game at the Ted most likely.
Right now (I think), the schedule is three games at the Charleston Classic (a not-bad but nowhere-near-Atlantis lineup with Dayton, Clemson and Temple or Auburn being the best opponents), Richmond, Towson, @VCU, @JMU, @W&M, and NSU at Scope. With three road games, an exempt event and a neutral-site game, and only two home games (three if Georgia State is coming back), there may not be a lot of wiggle room for prestige road/neutral games.

His job will be on the line when someone who makes a large enough donation that the AD cannot afford to do without has had enough of him. That could well be next year if we have a similar season.
Add to that the fact that JJ's contract expires after next year so we can cut ties without further obligations, whereas the AD will have to come up with justification to extend it.
If I am JJ, I want to give myself the best chance to avoid it coming down to a quarterfinal game in Birmingham again. Norfolk State on a neutral court and 2-3 additional bodybag games at the Ted in the OOC schedule won't cut it. There are no Louisville opportunities in the Charleston Classic next year either. We'll be lucky if even one of our matchups there ends up in the top 100.

You sure? Those courtside seats were pretty empty on senior night.
