SBJ (SportsBusiness Journal) today announces 5 finalists for 2018 AD of the Year:
Sandy Barbour, Penn State
Jeff Bourne, James Madison
Boo Corrigan, Army
Jim Phillips, Northwestern
Danny White, UCF

Thanks for posting this. Congrats to Jeff Bourne for the honor.

Same to Sandy Barbour. Helping Penn State dig out of their "mess" with the previous AD serving time in prison, she has done an admirable job of calming the waters and helping PSU rebuild their image.

Congrats to the AD that has us playing on the road at Norfolk State and only playing only 5 home games coming off back to back trips to the national championship game. A true visionary.

We'll never be able to keep him wearing purple ties now. I'm sure TX, Clemson, FL, Ohio St., etc. have had him on a short list for awhile. This will surely suck him away and I don't blame him, we are small potatoes in the world in which he plays.

There's the spirit! So many suck-ups posting in here clearly don't see the gravity of my original thread title and post. It's UH OH, not OH YEAH!

JMU is very fortunate to have Jeff Bourne. He will retire in a few years and bleed Purple the rest of his years. People on the outside look at JMU and are jealous of everything we have and everything we are. We are at the top of the 1AA mountain and that is a good place to be. Wait until the UB Convo is built! Thank you Jeff for all you do. Some of us appreciate you.

Thanks Gary. It is amazing to me how someone could perform so well in their job yet be the subject of so much ridicule. Is JB perfect? No. Is he a solid AD with a strong athletics program that wins without cheating? Heck yes.

You and I are old enough to know that these are the glory days of JMU athletics. So much success in so many different sports. It is good to be a Duke.

There’s little room to disagree there.

But, I will, softly.

Unless, and until we can get this train wreck of what was once our “flagship” program, MBB, out of the 20+ yr (some would rightfully argue 35 yr.) funk, we’ll be forever pushing this cart uphill.

It’s really a bit of a fascinating anomaly. We had a rather precious jewel in our hand, just look at the schools that have embraced that path, and we somehow either chose a different one, or just flat blew it.

I think it’s some of each.

Rather inexplicable, really.

We were bringing 7500 to the Convo when football, with Rip was bringing 500 to Bridgeforth, and another 1200 to the hill.

Couldn’t be happier were now filling a large, beautiful BFS, but how on earth did we stray so far from what got us started?

Not really a knock on JB, or anyone else, most are killing it, but when does the 1-A flagship sport truly turn the corner?

In my lifetime? My daughters, perhaps?

To turn the MBB program around, we need a young, hot shot coach who can recruit despite the hardships working against the program. Once 20 win seasons become a bare minimum expectation, and NCAA appearances occur at least every five years, then you'll finally see the program turn around.

We're still searching for this mythical unicorn of a coach. The accountant up top can't get cheap when it comes to compensation though. I guess that's one of the bigger problems.

"Unicorn Coach" is a good metaphor. Experience as a winning HC, but still young, ability to recruit and run a clean program, and then you've got the issue of compensation...the stubborn path JMU has taken on hiring HCs in MBB has been poor, to say the least.

To me finding the "Unicorn Coach" means JMU taking on an entirely new approach to filling the hiring pool...and taking serious looks at candidates like Ben McCullum: 36 years old, 9 years as a HC (DII), articulate, well educated (BA in Finance, MA in Athletic Administration), won a recent NC at DII, multiple coaching awards, good family man, married with 3 young kids, overall WL record 203-75, currently coaches in a small gym with limited resources and a salary that JMU's offer could double, maybe even triple.

Not wishing LR any ill, but if he doesn't get it turned around this next year, repeating the hiring mistakes of the past isn't going to get it done. You reading this JB?

When GOAT HCLR turns the ship next season and we win back to back titles to the NCAAs and open the new arena and win every game, I'll be super sad when our unicorn gets poached by the next school willing to pay him triple what he's making here at the time.

I'd lean towards hiring an older coach with the same credentials, similar to Shaver at W&M. Find someone with a longer history of success in a lower division who wanted to retire in the Valley and was content to make JMU their last stop. They could develop a mini-coaching tree of young, hungry assistants with ties to the school to attract as the next HC with a similar coaching style and system for continuity.

Deez, I'm assuming there is a bit of sarcasm in your post.

We are getting what we paid for, no one should be surprised at the poor results.

Hmmmm...

Sandy Barbour is the only female?

Danny White is far away the best creator of fantasy national championships? In a league of his own.

Boo Corrigan is the only AD I've ever known named Boo?
