Probably about even money to make the semis. Playing an NASL team in the quarterfinals.

As exciting as last night's game was, it pales in comparison to the Yale North Carolina game when Scott Sterling miraculously saved the day:

I know Djiby has plenty of goals but the game is much more enjoyable to watch without him in.

I agree with this. The guy is good at getting himself in position, but other than that, not all that great. Not a great striker. Stereotypical flopper too.

Guy has 0 ball skills in the open field and he's not going to beat anyone in a sprint. However, he does have a nose for the ball near the goal.

Yeah. It. Was. Just. A. Comment.

You really know how to elevate the innocuous into something it isn't.

Anyway, I don't know that Cincinnati is on a curve more than it is on an island. It's fun that we can enjoy this so much, but I go to the Chicago Tribune online this morning and they don't even
mention it. Last night was a lot of fun, but I couldn't help
But notice that even ESPN did no more than a 15 second recap before immediately talking about baseball, then basketball.

I don't think those two outlets are the target audience anyway. This has always been an audition for MLS. And honestly most sports outlets don't care about MLS.

RE: Nippert Defilement - Saw it Tonight
Finally went to my first game - seat at midfield 23 rows up. Observations....

Biggest surprise: The level of fan knowledge during the game. Seems like many groups sitting around me had a soccer guru that explained the finer points. Very little chit-chat about work, neighborhood in Anderson, or kids dance team in Cheviot. Fans were really engaged.

Certainly a fantastic event for Cincinnati. Huge crowd that reminded me of the BK years that typically arrived a little tardy but most stayed until the end. The Bailey is very cool and kept both players and fans energy levels up throughout the game. Not sure the song "Referee is full of sh$t" would be allowed at a UC football game but it was very well done and funny. And no UC policy of "please don't bang on the fencing".

That actually leads me to my biggest complaint - but not with FCC. UC once again really has trouble getting out of its own way. First of all, 32,000 people in attendance with crowds beginning to hit the area at 5:30, yet not a single business in TUC is open including the bookstore. I guess UC doesn't need any additional revenue. Far, far more food booths, beer vendors, variety of choices than I have ever seen in almost 40 years of games at Nippert. More customer service/ushers than ever including reps that direct people to other restroom choices when one particular line is too long. Did I say variety of food choices - can't say it enough.

For those diehard FCC fans, I did have the chance to talk to the Chicago Fire owner while the teams were warming up. He was absolutely stunned by the crowd (and that was before the game) and the huge facility. He also stated, similar to ESPN's comments, that the MLS would be foolish to force the team into another venue. We both had a laugh that it could be the first team in the history of professional sports that drew better as a minor league program than a major league team. Quote "I wish we had this environment."

So hopefully the MLS will come calling someday and let Nippert remain its home. But one thing is for sure, both Mitch Hildebrandt and Alan Koch will be headed to the MLS real soon.

Good post. Glad to hear you had a good time. That's my hope is the MLS will eventually be convinced that it's insane to give up one of the great sports venues in the country, that's become a spectacular environment for something unknown.

RE: Nippert Defilement - Saw it Tonight
Maybe they could admit FCC and let them stay at Nippert on some sort of probationary situation.l and they could give suggestions on necessary renovations but I can't see what more they'd want other than scoreboard sound system, things that are already in the works. If the FCC ownership is comfortable with the situation I can't see why it would be such an issue. Is it more of an image problem that mls has with it? If it ain't broke don't fix it seems to ring especially true with this case. As another poster showed I think the tide is turning on local Governments funding stadiums so maybe mls shouldn't push so hard for that.

FCC seems to be a special case and they'd be smart to deal with it as such. I would imagine mls owners would hate the idea as it already seems to be a major home field advantage for FCC. I could see Nippert almost immediately becoming one of the best places for traveling mls fans to visit.

Are the food court and bookstore open during weekday football games?

I'm sure FCC prefers that all food and merchandise be purchased in the stadium. Just wondering if this is by design.

2 small things.. Djiby sitting there is not during the PK's.. no one else in that photo is looking at the goal area at all, or cheering like it was over at that point.. to me it looks like it is between the extra time periods or while the coaches were addressing the team before the PK's.. which as a non dressed player Djiby and others cannot be in the huddle.. so point of clarification on that.. and 2 he has a hurt ankle, enough to miss a game so probably enough to not stand on during the game.. so if he ran around after the game and hurt himself worse, or delayed his return then he'd be labeled an idiot. Let's be honest in our assessments.

Lets not forget, everyone that plays in the USL probably has a big hole in their game, otherwise they'd be in MLS or higher.. Djiby has an issue with Ball control at times, and when he is sick of being hit in a game he starts to fall easily so he can "get calls".. don't watch these games expecting Messi.. but go to a game with a fresh mind and watch him direct traffic around the field. He does soo much off the ball for other players providing leadership and experience on proper runs and positioning that no one else is providing. He does have that, and an absolute magnet to the ball, which is usually the number 1 attribute you want in a goal scorer. Again all these players have holes

About half of the food court vendors are open, of course the bookstore, the little snack shop, and the Rathskellar are all open on weekday gamedays.

I'm sure you are correct FCC wants it all. Shame on UC for saying yes.

The Lindner College of Business should be embarrassed with the poor negotiating skills of UC senior and mid-level executives whether its the FCC contract or Realignment.

If FCC was getting as much of the gameday revenue as the people on this board think they are getting... I can promise you MLS would NOT be demanding they move to their own stadium.. Quit making this argument, it is simply not true. MLS wants FCC to control the dollars and cents of all aspects.. stadium, parking, concessions etc. Simply put, they do not, so MLS wants them to move to a place where they DO get that money directly.

That's exactly right. The problem is when fans do not come at some point and all the overhead has to be absorbed. The fallacy of professional sports globally. It's great when it works, but when it doesn't the bills have to be footed.

As far as the big holes in their game, the MLS is maybe AAA to USL's AA ball. Its "major league" in the United States but its a lot of rungs down the ladder to other pro leagues. Is it in the top 5 leagues in the world? Nope. Top 10? Arguably.

I saw some guys on the USL side last night who actually looked physically superior to some of the guys on the MLS side. Perhaps just younger legs. Lots of guys in MLS are on the downside of long careers spent in the upper leagues....the MLS is a way to extend the run...lots of MLS guys have holes in their games, too which is why they are not in English Premier, La Liga, German Bunda, Italian A, Portugese, French or a couple other leagues that escape my mind.

Its a weird sport in that regard. Its fun but its like folks are geeked up about the South Korean Pro Baseball League bringing a franchise to town.

I don't think FCC or MLS realize the dropoff that may happen if they move out of Nippert. Nippert is a huge part of the awesome experience of games, and it will remain to be seen if they can replicate that in a modern stadium built on an old parking lot somewhere. FCC appears to be fully of surprises though, so maybe they will.

Either way, this period has been great for UC, Nippert, Cincy and FCC - it couldn't have gone much better thus far.
