He had a very good six year stretch with the Cincinnati Reds as well. He finished runner up for the Cy Young one season and throwing a no-hitter against St. Louis. He is a member of the Reds Hall of Fame.

Yes, but he wasn't quite enough to get the Reds over the top once they traded off Tony Perez.

Question RE: Grim Reaper Should Hang Himself
Cardinals legend Lou Brock dies Sunday afternoon at 81

[Image: 5b96600c3a43c.image.jpg?resize=620%2C426]
Lou Brock steals his 105th base, beating Philly Larry Bowa's tag as umpire John McSherry makes it official. Photo by Sam Leone/St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Baseball so much more fun with the steal, hit-and-run and double-switches. The NL game (the original game) was the best.

I thoroughly enjoyed the '68 Cardinals even with their loss to Denny McClain's Tigers in the Series. Lou Brock, Curt Flood and Roger Marris in the outfield with Bob Gibson on the mound was pretty impressive. They just ran into Lolich and McLain.

Double-switches don't do much for me, but the steal, hit-and-run, and the running game in general do. The 1960s and early 1970s were the best era of baseball to me--Mays, Aaron, Stargell, McCovey, Koufax, Gibson, off the top of my head. It's to baseball as Magic-Byrd to the NBA.

Being in Houston, the late 1960s Astros were a budding powerhouse, but they got impatient and traded it all away. Consider they lineup they could have gone through the 1970s with--C-Jerry Grote, 1B-John Mayberry/Bob Watson, 2B-Joe Morgan, 3B-Doug Rader, SS-Denis Menke/Roger Metzger, LF-Jim Wynn, CF-Cesar Cedeno, RF-Rusty Staub, BENCH-John Bateman, Nate Colbert, Sandy Alomar Sr., Cesar Geronimo, SP-Larry Dierker, Don Wilson, Mike Cuellar, Tom Griffin, Denny Lemaster, RP Dave Giusti, Jim Ray, Claude Raymond.

Grote went to the Mets in 1965. Alomar went to the Mets in 1967. Raymond went to the Braves in 1967. Giusti went to the Cardinals in 1968. Bateman and Colbert went to Montreal and San Diego in the 1969 expansion draft. Staub went to the Expos in 1969. Cuellar went to the Orioles in 1969. Morgan, Menke, and Geronimo went to the Reds in 1971. Mayberry went to the Royals in 1971. Lemaster went to the Expos in 1971. Wynn went to the Dodgers in 1973. Ray went to the Tigers in 1973. Wilson died in 1975. Rader went to the Padres in 1975. Dierker went to the Cardinals in 1976. Griffin went to the Padres in 1976. Metzger went to the Giants in 1978. Watson went to the Red Sox in 1979. Cedeno went to the Reds in 1981. The ended up getting little or no return from any of those deals--3 years of Tommy Helms and Lee May in the Morgan deal was the most they got from any of them. The real damage was done 1968-71. There were unconfirmed rumors that racial tensions played a role in the Staub and Cuellar deals. If the Astros hadn't traded them all away, the Big Red Machine of the 1970s could very easily have been the Big Orange Machine.

Poker player and WPT commentator Mike Sexton passed away. This one is tough. This is the guy that got me into playing tournament poker. He had been battling prostate cancer.

Yea, great guy and incredible player. Known more for his stint at the WPT, he was a player first. One of only a handful of pre-boom players to have success post-boom. A lot of stories have gone with him. After Doyle passes, much of the first hand stories from the early days are going to be gone.

Be interesting to get Optimistic Owl's take on this. He's played a lot of competitive poker. You two probably know each other.

Morgan and Geronimo for what, Tommy Helms?

Morgan, Geronimo, Jack Billingham, Ed Armbruster (key bunt in '75 series) and Denis Menke for Tommy Helms, Lee May and Jimmy Stewart.

There was a Big Red Machine, but switching from Crosley to Riverfront broke it. They needed more speed and didn't need as much power. May, Perez and Bench combined for 119 home runs in 1970 even with nearly half the season at Riverfront.
