Quote:Voters in the District of Columbia passed a measure on Tuesday in favor of petitioning Congress to become a state in the union.
79 percent of voters cast votes in favor of the ballot measure, which splits the district into a residential state with a small federal district in the middle of it for government buildings and monuments, as we have reported.
The newly approved measure had four parts:
- agree that the District should be admitted to the Union as the State of New Columbia
- approve of a Constitution of the State of New Columbia to be adopted by the Council
- approve the State of New Columbia's boundaries
- agree that the State of New Columbia shall guarantee an elected representative form of government.
What do you think, any chance in hell of happening?
I say no. It would be an automatic two Dem senators, and Reps won't allow that into their rigged system.

Dems would be wise to stop trying to manipulate and rig a system and actually work on behalf of the american voter instead of trying to screw the american voter over and calling them racists and xenophobes. I know its a novel idea, but I would seriously think about going down that route right now.

No, and it should not. In no way should a city be given the power of a state in our government. Let them vote in Virginia or Maryland senate elections and maybe give them *1* representative in congress.

They might have a chance if the State of Jefferson (southern Oregon and Northern California) is created at the same time. One new blue state, one new red state...and slightly lessen California's and Oregon's political influence.

All dems want to do is remove the unfair advantages the system gives the GOP.
you literally don't care about the very issue that caused the american revolution happening in the first place being inflicted on 3 million americans.

If DC wants to be a state, petition to join Maryland.
If DC rejoins Maryland, let's pick a new district to house the federal government. The capital city should not be part of a state.

RE: New Columbia
The idea that we will create a new state of 61 square miles, with Zero industry, Zero agriculture, ranking 49th among the states in population and with a 95/5 ratio between the two main parties is (of course) a joke.
If Maryland is willing to take the District back -- as Virginia did with their 39 square miles -- then fine. Otherwise it stays as-is.

seriously. what is inherently wrong with DC statehood? solving it via statehood as a concept is by far the most reasonable, straight forward, and simplest way to do it.

That's not really relevant... It's still one city
Give them a representative and let them vote in the senate elections of VA or Maryland
Problem solved..

and 6th in total GDP. you have got to be kidding me trying to trivialize DC.
the 90% dem leaning issue is more of an argument in favor of it than anything. it will be a de facto heavily gerrymandered district packing that many libs into one area. so you give all those people the vote, but they have the smallest impact on the system they could possibly have for a cluster of that many lib voters.

how is that relevant? you are saying people who live in a city are somehow less than people who live in a rural area.

First of all where did you get three million? The population of DC is 670,000 so lets throw the "3 million" stuff away
The reason DC needs to be a federal district and not a state is so that the Congress does not meet under the authority of a state government. The last time that happened things got a little ugly.
Congress was being mobbed and the governor of Pennsylvania refused to do anything about it. The effect was that congress left Philadelphia and started bouncing around difference cities.
Finally a solution was drafted.. Takes a 10 square mile chunk of land and set it aside so that no state has power over it and thus undue influence over the federal government.
Here's the question How can a federal government wield any authority if it was physically subservient to the jurisdiction of whatever state it occupied?
