Allow tailgating in lots closest to stadium on first-come, first serve basis for these road games.
Let kids play on the field during watch party (no food or drinks allowed on field).
Why not do this in the Ted (as long as their isn't a bball game)? Put those new video boards to good use.
My guess is cost. It has to cost some amount of money to open the TED. There might have to be a way that doing this would at least come close to paying for it.
The concept for the game day watch party at Forman Field is fantastic.
A little off topic....just to take a moment to expand on this, I have seen and been a part of a few Schools that have a Spring Fling Game/Party that includes a fair like atmosphere for the entire day. A larger version of what we did a few years back with the Bouncy Room stuff, a rock climbing area, interactive events, face painting and even a few rides for the kids. A lot off the schools have additional food vendors and all the sports apparel shops, gift item and any and everything promoting the school that you can imagine. It is a fantastic time for the Schools to have a spring fling clearance with discounts to get everyone on board with wearing the schools colors/gear and to get ready for new stuff that will be arriving .
A few Schools have parlayed the spring game into a massive event that instils service, participation, pride along with the excitement and exhilaration to achieve that emotional connection that will create an everlasting attachment, bond for future generations to BLEED ODU BLUE. This is all centered around a vision for the UNIVERSITY, STUDENTS and FANS. It opens up an opportunity to be a part of an event that is fun, builds comradery and allows everyone to give back..... as some would say to "Pay it Forward".
The entire event is organized and wrapped into a charity event to aid or help a pressing need for the community. In our case a perfect example would be for the local "Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughter" The University would only charge $10 for an all day pass for all activities. To accomplish this goal it would take assistance and cooperation from the City and other local municipalities to help. For example they would ask the local cities to have volunteers of city support staff for Police, Fire, and ER staff for the day. To get the Food Vendors, that ODU has a contract with to give a one day free fair day, where they give their profits to that charity. Get the University to have volunteer staffing for the day and student volunteers to aid any way they can help. The University would have to pay any overhead cost that they could not get as a donation or the hard cost of the event. After those cost are covered all remaining funds would be donated to the Charity. Free TV Radio Advertising for the event which culminates with the ODU Spring Football Game.
The first few years it may only have 5 -8 thousand people attend, but with the right promoting, I have no doubt that ODU would sell out this event every year.
Just to follow the money for a second ....
8,000 fans $80,000.00
If the University spent $40,000 to cover the needed over head cost, that is still a
$40,000.00 DONATION. Very quickly it could become huge.
20,000 tickets Sold to fans $200,000.00
If the University spent $60,000 to cover the needed over head cost that is NOW a
$140,000.00 DONATION.
Just a thought...
