After all, lots of expansion teams have absolutely horrendous names – Thunder, Wild, Avalanche, Lightning all spring to mind – and we eventually got used to those terrible names. I'm sure we will get used to this latest terrible nickname too.
Avalanche in Colorado makes sense due to the snow sports out there.
Wild, ehh not sure how many wolves or whatever are native to Minnesota but the logo is pretty cool.
While I don't think the Thunder is a bad name, WDF with the logo?
Never had bad feelings on the Lightning being used.
I'd be more concerned with say the Raptors. Timberwolves seemed kind of long winded.
No, I disagree. All of those names just seem so corporatized.
They are the equivalent of elevator music. They only exist so as not to offend people and that sucks.
They're mostly named after geological phenomena because that draws less criticism. They're lame, they're boring, they are unimaginative, and they just don't work. They don't evoke anything... Which is precisely why they were chosen in the first place.
I hate all of those names with a passion. Also, they don't sound like a big league sports franchise. We come to accept them over time but when they first came out with a name like the Thunder, for example, that sounds like it should be an Arena Football League team name or some low level minor-league baseball team's name. That does not sound like the name of an NBA team.
You got names like the Celtics and the Mavericks and the Rockets and the 76ers – all cool names. And you choose the freaking Thunder?!
To me that screams out to the world that you don't believe that Oklahoma City doesn't have anything unique or interesting about it other than the fact that it has lousy weather.
That's not good.
People make fun of the nickname Pelicans but I don't hate that. It actually means something to the people of New Orleans. That's how it's supposed to work! How sad would it have been if they had instead named their team the Swamps or the Bayou.
How is there not a pro team nicknamed the Beavers? Hornets is a great hockey name. Why not something like that? Las Vegas' nickname should reflect its primary industry. However, if you can't do that for political reasons, it should be the Scorpions. That would be a pretty badass nickname.
Seattle, when they get a team, and they will, should also reflect something interesting and unique to the Pacific Northwest. It should not be the Seattle Rain or something obscenely cheesy like that. Give us something cool and unique to your part of the country – that's what makes a good nickname. Quit naming teams after your 11 o'clock news weather forecast.
I keep waiting for us to be an artist to the Louisville Low Pressure Systems or the Honolulu Humidity.
