RE: OT: Two Little League All-Star Teams-- 45 minutes apart -- make it to Williamsport
I umpired little league for 13 years. I couldn't stand the parents. I loved the kids but hated the over bearing parents. Especially the ones who lived their dreams through their kids. It's really a shame to watch the kids faces after these parents talk to them. (Even the really talented players)

I don't understand how these coaches / parents can take off so much time from work. Like three weeks in a single month?

Little league is a big deal around hear. Most of these parents plan ahead and many of them have a parent that might not work.

How time flies. I coached Isaiah Head's dad in high school. He was a darn good player as well. I'm only 42, but it makes me feel really old.

I'm only 56 and don't feel old!
And I coached 3 of the players from last night.
Carson Myers who started the game.
Jackson Moore who finished the game.
And Spencer Newman who's seeing basketballs at the plate right now. He's absolutely in a freaking zone. Not to mention making stud plays at 2nd.
All 3 of those boys helped us win the county championship at the pee wee level. I'm not gonna lie, I knew they were good but am surprised they've gone this far. All they do is win, win, win. Lol.
I'm happy for the whole team but extremely happy for these 3. If I wasn't waiting around BG for my first grandchild (was due Sunday...they gonna induce tomorrow) I'd be up in PA watching these jokers.

Parents will do anything for their kids, but you have to understand the advantages some of these teams have.
While the Little League World Series is super competitive, and the last couple rounds of Regional play has become very competitive as well, Little League is istill lacking at the state level. A league like Bowling Green pretty much knows going in that they are almost certain to be playing in Indianapolis for Regionals, and they will have a good shot at Williamsport from there. There might be one or two teams in the entire state of Kentucky capable of challenging them right now. They enter their State level tournament as an Overwhelming Favorite. Regionals are harder, but even then they many times don't get challenged
There are parents of 10 year olds in Bowling Green right now watching this series and already marking next years dates off on their work calendars so they can go watch their kid play. It's sort of a fact for life for them.
If you ever go on the Website for Little League and look at their Regional Tournament brackets, you'll notice the same town often represents a state for multiple years. You just don't see the real surprise teams that often anymore. Little League is all about the cash flow that comes into a league in a given year, and financially most leagues just can't compete with what these leagues get.

Lots of truth there. In the last 16 years, 6 of the Kentucky state winners were from Bowling Green/Warren County and 6 were from Owensboro (60 miles northwest of BG). Those two towns have dominated Kentucky Little League for quite some time. Also, 6 of the last 16 Great Lakes Regional Winners have been from KY, more than any other GL state, 2 from Owensboro and 2 from Bowling Green.

I think Chief is short changing the talent of these kids....
money might have a small amount to do with getting more teaching or better equipment but at the end of the day. The talent shown by these kids are THEIRS....
not money
It takes hard work, dedication, and talent, to get to the level these teams make it to.

In that year before you left the Sun Belt, I snuck out to Bowling Green to watch AState play you guys, and out of curiosity because I knew I was in a huge Little League town, I went out and drove by the Little League facilities there. It's incredibly nice...to the point that there are some colleges that would like to have that quality of field.
You hear a lot about MLB's urban initiative, and the very good reason for it is that the Little League facilities in some of those towns are literally crumbling. There's just simply more money available to a kid from Bowling Green, Chula Vista, Goodlettsville, and even San Antonio than there is for a kid from New York City.
Little League prides itself in the fact that everyone can play, and that's true, but it's never works out that way. There are inherent advantages that will always make one league more successful than another.
