I think it is a bad idea. Since the Tribe always sells a game to an FBS school, they would have to buy a game every year to play 12. So you get a crap opponent at home.
There are enough games in the playoffs as is.

i would think the Tribe could get a home and home arrangement with a good FCS/lower FBS opponent to get 6 home games w/o a crap opponent. Say an old rival from SoCon, an upper level Ivy or Patriot team, perhaps even an ODU or Liberty.

Not going to get a home and home with any FBS opponent.

We haven't even had an FBS team play us at home since Rutgers wrapped up their contractual obligations with us back in the early 80s. We just don't have the facilities or draw to get a big program to come to W'burg. Why would they do that?
We have had big boy basketball teams at W&M Hall to include top 5 Duke 25 years ago. NU mixed in hockey to get Michigan State to come there for MBB and a few other local FCS programs managed to get big MBB schools to come to their place but that's not FB, obviously.

Hampton, Norfolk State, and Liberty all become more likely OOC, and maybe see VMI back on the schedule, although I have no problem never playing them again. Home and homes with NSU & HU are good, I think. We're generally better, but attendance is up for those games and it's an easy road game for our fans.

Small, small, smal chance ODU would agree to a 2 for 1 for us for football

Not sure why you are so down on VMI. Yes, the series is lopsided, no more so than HU and Norfolk State.
If you check back on the stats over the last 20 years, you will also find that VMI is a much better draw than either Hampton or Norfolk at Zable.

We have a scheduled road game at ODU in 2020 with no two for one involved. I doubt if the "full of themselves" Monarchs, especially with their current coach, would ever agree to come to Williamsburg for football.

Conference schedule is 8 games, 4 at home and 4 on the road.
If you sell a game to an FBS team, as the Tribe always does, that leaves 3 non-conference games in a 12 game season. If you do home and away contracts with all three, that means 6 home games every other season. The only way to get 6 home games every year is to buy a game every year, or get multiple schools to agree to 2 for 1 deals.
Who can the Tribe pay to play in Williamsburg with no return game or as a 2 for 1?
Look at the sorry teams that JMU gets every season to pad their home schedule. It isn't worth playing 12 each season for that. It is another opportunity for fans to tailgate, and that is about it.

It also makes it easier to get to 7 wins if a couple of those teams are FCS cupcakes.

RE: Proposal to extend the FCS season to 12 games
It won't just be cupcakes that will be looking to fill in an extra game, it will also be good FCS teams. I would expect that W&M would have the ability to choose which type of team with which it partners.
I don't know if schools like UNC will continue to purchase 2 FCS games, but a 12th game does not necessarily mean paying to bring a crappy team to the 'burg, nor guarantee 6 home games, but it would be nice if the home OOC schedule included one guaranteed win and one more competitive team.
Personally I'd like to see 4 home conference games, 4 away conference games, an FBS game away, a OOC FCS game away, and 2 OOC FCS teams @ home with one targeting a win and the other targeting strength of schedule with a reasonable chance of a win.

I wouldn't guess cupcakes or good teams. If it's me doing the scheduling I would be trying to fill the new slot with teams who will either a) draw fans, b) bring fans, or c) have some other strategic alignment such as playing us in hoops.

RE: Proposal to extend the FCS season to 12 games
I looked back at 2014, when we had the 12-game schedule, to remind myself how it played out. Six home games, six road. The non-conference games were at Va. Tech and Hampton, then home against Norfolk State and Lafayette.
If it became a permanent thing, I imagine we would alternate between 6-6 home-road years and 5-7 years. We could set up alternating home-and-homes with Hampton and Norfolk State (or VMI, Liberty, or the other flavor of your choice). But with the FBS game always being away, the last slot would almost always alternate between home and away with whatever opponent(s). Unless we can luck into teams who are willing to play a single game at Zable to fill a schedule hole, or are willing to buy games (hah!), there's no way we can count on six home games year in and year out. NC Tribe is right on the money.
That said, I like the 12-game concept. More games -- what's not to like?

Still haven't forgiven them for Mike Cook & Steve Fill. Maybe I was looking for it, but it always seemed like they tried to take guys out since they couldn't win the game.

Two things ALWAYS happen when we play in Lexington: Tribe win and I leave with an awful sunburn.
