Why couldn't you just make a sleeve out of steel, attach it to the back of the stands, cut half of the mast off and lower it into the basket and stick a bolt through it?
Of course it's absurd. I'm sure we're the only DI school that has light posts IN FRONT of spectators. At some point they will have to be moved behind the stands and that will screw up the renovations of the east stands that is supposed to allow for more walking areas.
It isn't like it's the "visitor" seating anymore, it is reserved Fan Plan seating. I don't know how much weight is up there. Cutting half to two-thirds of the mast off would remove a lot, though. If there would still be too much weight to concentrate in one spot it would seem like they ought to be able to weld up a rack like on the press-box side to distribute the weight across a wider area. I believe there are 16 luminaires which probably weight about 60 lbs each. Of course the support system adds some weight.

Those east stands are not equipped to take on that weight. I agree that something should be done but that is a tough nut

Well, I don't know. 16*60 = 960 pounds. That's like 5 adults. If the rack weighs 1000 pounds that's 5 more adults. Those stands hold a lot of people. I believe the steel structure is accessible from the back side. Spread the weight between 2-3 columns if necessary. I doubt that the structure is that close to failure, that you couldn't attach that center light cluster to it somehow.
I'm sure the suggestion is on the "things we could do" list. Could be no one ever thought about moving just the center mast, though.
