The Oscars and Chris Rock
Okay Chris Rock just did a 10 minute monologue on racism, and while what he said was probably true at times, it just wasn't funny.

Now they did a video segment (which was funny), and then more stuff about racism (which wasn't funny).

This is shaping up to be the most controversial Oscars since the early 1970's (when Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando and others said whatever they wanted to).

Like Jamie Foxx said, if Will Smith wants to win an Oscar, he needs to act better.

BTW, the weirdest part of the show was Rock bringing out Stacey Dash so she could come out and wish everyone a Happy Black History Month. Now they just paid homage to Jack Black as part of the Oscars salute to Black History Month. And there has been more Whoopi Goldberg than you can possibly imagine.

I thought I was the only one who thought that monologue was lame and unfunny. I turned it off before he finished. I'm not turning it back on.

We all thought it was hilarious and that it was one of the best opening monologues the Oscar's had.

I couldn't figure out. Was the Stacy Dash bit supposed to be a joke?

She had said on Fox News that they should get rid of BET and Black History Month. If you have to explain a joke, it's not funny.

I'm not saying I didn't laugh at some of Rock's jokes, but that was the entire monologue's theme. And it's been an ongoing theme throughout. Okay the filmed segment at the Compton theater was good. That should have been the opening monologue.

Same here. He blasted Hollywood and the protestors and was funny doing it. Figures this Klan rally disguised as a message board wouldn't like it.

Holy crap. The Oscars just had a show stopping moment with Lady Gaga. She sang a song about sexual assault (Til It Happens To You from a movie called The Hunting Ground). I've never heard of the song or the movie, but it was stunning. Introduced by Joe Biden, the song built to an amazing finish where actual victims were behind Lady Gaga.

Unbelievable. That song alone has made tonight's show a memorable Oscars for me.

RE: The Oscars and Chris Rock
I think his opening monologue was the most important monologue in Oscars history. Hopefully this opens people's eyes to one of the biggest issues facing humanity which is systematic racism. You give me a category in this years Oscars and I can give you a worthy African-American. Too bad "whitey" doesn't see it that way. Doesn't matter now, deserving or not you can bet an African-Anerican will be winning an Oscar in one of the major categories for at least the next five years and even that won't be enough.

I have not watched the oscars in years. Don't know that I've ever watched the whole thing, just bits and pieces. Not something I care about, and I can always read the winners' names later.

RE: The Oscars and Chris Rock
Chris Rock actually grew on me quite a bit as the show went on, and ultimately I think it will prove to a rousing success. It's not a racism issue to me, it's a is it funny issue. Maybe it's my age but I didn't chuckle when he makes the joke about Jada Pinkett Smith not coming to the Oscars that it's like Chris Rock not getting an invite to Rihanna's panties.

The Oscars are always going to be out of mainstream America whether they're giving the best acting awards to people of any color in movies that no one has seen. It's like the one lady in Compton said in the funny taped piece they did - are those movies from London?

By the way, this graphic shows that the Oscars really haven't been racist to blacks through the years. If anything, they've slighted Latinos and Asians. And last night, there was a silly stereotype joke (that fell flat) about three small Asian kids who worked for Price, Waterhouse & Cooper.

RE: The Oscars and Chris Rock
I recorded it to watch Chris Rock's bits later. I've always been a fan of Rock.

Always a good gem:

Quote:"Martin Luther King stood for nonviolence. Now what’s Martin Luther King? A street. And I don’t give a **** where you are in America, if you're on Martin Luther King Boulevard, there’s some violence going down." - Chris Rock

I usually prefer the Golden Globes to the Oscars. Looser, more interesting categories, slightly less pretentious.
