Hey, I love Penny and if he wants the job he gets an interview simply b/c he is Penny Hardaway, but no experience makes it a tough sell.

Still, he loves us and the 901.

If it worked, it would be beautiful
If it failed.... do you want to be the one to tell Penny he has to leave?

Seems risky if we can't be sure he'd succeed.

He did. The east high thing and Lester thing were special situations - maybe he changed his mind.

Ugh. The Drexler circus ruined me on ever considering that. Don't ever want to lose my esteem for the greatest player I ever saw by watching him coach the Tigers.

I see this perspective.

I do NOT want to have the conversations we are having about Pastner about Penny.

Never.
Never ever.

Unless he wants to pay the university 2.65M a year to coach. Then, I'll take my chances.

For every Drexler there is a Hoiberg or Hurley.

Its a definitive risk though.

RE: Get Penny Hardaway as coach!!!
I am on the fence about Hardaway.

The Drexler experience at Houston worries me - that went very badly. Then again, Penny has actually coached - MS, AAU, and now HS, whereas I don't know that Drexler had EVER coached (not positive, though).

Then, there is the fear of what happens when things eventually go bad - and they almost always do. See Finch - he had a very good college coaching background when he took over and did quite well for a time. Who knows, if health issues hadn't affected him, he might still be our coach leading us to our 3rd National Title. (I know that his health didn't really deteriorate until after he was fired, but I think it was starting to take a toll before.) Just think if Alexander and Gray didn't have the agent issue, if Vaughn doesn't tear up his knee as we were rolling the Hogs, if Garner doesn't get called for the hand-check. But, I digress..

Unless you have really watched Penny coach (and I haven't), I don't know how you can have a real solid opinion regarding him. Does he relate well with his players and assistants? Does he garner the respect of his players? Can he get his players to play hard and to play as a team? Can he structure his practices to maximize the benefit? Can he put his teams in offensive and defensive positions that use their talents in a way that maximizes the team's potential?

I am intrigued by the possibility of Penny coaching the Tigers. I think he would really recruit well in the beginning and, if he demonstrates he can coach, the sky will be the limit. If not, recruiting will falter and we will have an ugly situation. Other positives are that we wouldn't have to worry too much about him jumping to another gig (we might really be his dream job) and we might not have to pay him a whole lot.

So, it really comes down to whether he appears to have demonstrated the capacity to coach. If someone has seem him coach and he makes you think "man, he really seems to have it", it might be a pretty good gamble. But, I think we need to feel pretty good about his ability and not just hand him the keys because he is a former legend that might be willing to take the job.

Finch was a multi year assistant under Kirk. I would totally support Penny as an assistant coach.

Seemed like his AAU teams actually ran plays and had drawn up out of bounds plays the few times they were on ESPN. I think he is smart and has been around long enough to know he would need assistants with lots of experience. If we are paying Pastner to leave we wont have a huge amount of money to spend on a new coach. For a cheaper option Hardaway might be one of the better names available.

No. Not going to go from one 'experiment' to another. He can recruit? Fine. See if he wants to come in as an assistant coach or top recruiter.

Enough of this mess. We need an established coach with a successful history.

RE: Get Penny Hardaway as coach!!!
One thing that I remember about Penny when he was a player, he was always coaching up his teammates during shoot around before a game.

Here's what I question. He has all the money he's ever gonna need. Does he really want to deal with the parents of primadonnas? Does he want to deal with the boosters? Will he get out and recruit? Being the coach is a full time job. It's not a hobby.
