RE: Get Penny Hardaway as coach!!!
But how are we going to feel if Penny doesn't succeed - remember Finch and how he was treated, despite some very good years. Another episode like that could ruin the Memphis BB program for years to come, especially after JP. And we would jeopardize losing Penny as an active supporter of the program thereafter (& I'm not talking about $$). Not worth it........it will never end well

That's my worry as well. A whole big can of worms will open up. You know how this city is about such things.

Exactly.

He coaches the #1 ranked HS team in Tennessee. That means he has probably (lol) the best team in Shelby County. That's better basketball than is played at CBU or LOC right there.

It's better than what's played at UofM right now.

I don't know if Penny can run a DI program or not.

What I do know is that Penny has tremendous ties throughout the basketball world.

Whether that pays dividends at the DI level, I have no idea, but would guess that it can't hurt.

Sadly JP isn't going anywhere unless its by his own doing and by that time, should it ever happen, there could be better options.

He didn't set us back 7 years, that's ridiculous. We were nationally relevant except for the last 2 years. We weren't as relevant as we were w/ Cal (duh) & we didn't always meet expectations, but we were relevant. The setback started last year...

One of the single dumbest things I've ever read on this board.

Good point. Penny has been out of the NBA for almost a decade and out of the national spotlight for longer than that. Recruiting might be a chore.

Kids still know Penny because of the Air Pennys, sneakers are a big part of urban culture and the Air Pennys are some of the most popular of all time. Nike still makes them and Penny has been out of the league for years.

Don't feel bad...no one knows. Even the ones acting like they do...

I just find it funny that we are so sure he will fail, yet some are totally sold on guys like Steve Forbes and Will Wade.

Don't get me wrong, those 2 would probably be fine...but they haven't proven much. More than Penny, sure...but it's not like we are talking Penny vs. Archie Miller...

maybe he feels a burning desire to compete??

We have two examples to go on in the same circumstance.

Fred Hoiberg

Clyde Drexler

One worked and one didn't

Big risk, big reward. A program like Memphis will never get anywhere playing it safe.

but he has connections where all big-time recruits make their college choice.....shoe companies

so does 30 other big time basketball coaches.

Bobby Hurley is pretty much Fred Hoiberg as well - he spent a couple of years as an assistant to Danny, but it's not like he had outstanding experience either. Did well at Buffalo, not sure how he's faring at AZST right now.

And Chris Mullin at St. John's is a wait and see - he's taking his lumps in year one, but has a lot of youth - time will tell with that hire.
