Considering the number of military bases in that area, the crowd may have been increased by reduced price or free tickets to active duty service personnel. Just a thought.
Or it could be that many other schools have fans that show up
Or it could be that they show up more when there is a quality opponent.
The UAB game last night would have had better attendance than it did had the students been back from the mid-term break. If you noticed the area behind the basket at your end in the 2nd half was not full. That is the ODU student section.
We usually have similar attendance to what you saw yesterday for most teams and when a big, competitive game such as against UAB, VCU, LA Tech, etc. comes up when classes are in session the attendance is usually at or near capacity (and louder).
ODU will sometimes have a game where they give a military discount, but I don't think they do it too often. We typically have very respectable attendance with several thousand season ticket holders present, and enjoy our basketball. I've been following them for 40+ years and watched many games in person when ODU (Paul Webb), VCU (JD Barnett), UAB (Gene Bartow), UNCC (forget coach's name), WKU (forgot coach's name), and South Alabama (forgot coach's name) had some epic battles in the glory years of the Sun Belt Conference.
Good luck to you guys the rest of the way this season.

The fallacy is that "Alabama-Birmingham" is not my alma mater's name, and never has been. Never, ever.
