I've always thought our first goal was to the win the conference.

Perhaps we need a poll, is it more important to win your OOC games and the bowl game vs. winning the conference?

Or put another way would you rather go 3-1 in OOC, win your bowl game, and finish 2-4 in conference or go 2-2 OOC (I know Ark St went 1-3 but I'm trying to take the names out of this hypothetical), lose bowl game, and win conference?

This is not a difficult problem to solve. Here's the question: At the end of the season would you rather be the conference champion or be #1 in power rankings made by your own fans on a message board?

This whole thread is stupid.

Yeah, but they don't deliver the BBS Sun Belt trophy by FedEx.

This whole thread is stupid.

This position eliminates the importance of winning bowls and final national rankings since all that is important is the conference championship and adds to the stupidness of the thread.

Not at all. It's great to make bowl games -- it validates your season. It's great to win bowl games -- it improves the perception and standing of both your team and your conference within the rest of the college football world. But we all played a full season and a full slate of conference games and the results are what they are. Thus, this thread is pointless.

Yet the title of the thread is still about conference power rankings. Winning your bowl game doesn't change actual conference results or actual head to head results.

We went undefeated in conference. Only one team had one loss and we beat them head to head on their field. The teams we didn't play had more than 1-loss.

Maybe if App State had beaten WKU or USM in their bowl game I could have been convinced to throw out the actual conference results. But that isn't the case.

We get this crap every year....Georgia Southern got the same crap last year. We have a champion....every year....they are the best team in the conference whether they even play in a bowl or not.....live with it.

RE: Your Final 2015 SBC Power Rankings
I don't see what's so bad about comparing seasons as a whole. And I'm confused by the people who say the conference champion automatically goes on top. App State, Arky State, Georgia Southern, and Georgia State played 38.5% of their season OOC. That has to factor into the discussion.

If you have any questions about who had the better season (hint: it's not the conference champion), please consult ANY of the computer rankings and advanced statistical rankings as we wait for the human polls, which will no doubt back them up.

RE: Your Final 2015 SBC Power Rankings
I said earlier in the year, couldn't the conference standings just be considered the "power rankings" once everyone has 3/4 of their OOC and at least a few conference games under their belt? I was told that "Power Rankings" put more weight into current/recent performance. If that is true, then GS should be at the top of the "Power Rankings" due to a blowout win against the highest rated bowl opponent of any SBC team, if postseason doesn't count, then we are 4th behind stAte, GSU, and App because of the most recent results.

This is nonsense.

Funny thing is App could have a very similar year as Ark St. had this year with our 2016 schedule.

UT-k - USC
Miami - Mizz at home
Akron - Toledo

A-State took a huge dump on themselves and the conference by losing to la tech, the #4 team in CUSA. They couldn't win one FBS OOC game. They also did not play GS in the rotation this year, and could very well have yet another L. No way an 11-2 team is below a four loss team in this league. That's nonsense.

I've gotta agree with the apps here. The season of work for App is better than stAte IMO. Yes, app got thumped at home, but app had the better season. Ga State thumped southern at home, but ga state certainly wasn't the overall better team for the season. Same with stAte and app.

Hard to compare schedules but easy to compare head-to-head games.

I think stAte would have beaten ODU, Wyoming, Ohio, and lost to Clemson.

I think App would have lost on the road at USC, on the road at Toledo (without your starting QB) at home to Mizzou if Lamb got hurt in the second half and playing Mizzou before their collapse

I also think App would have gotten beat by the La Tech team that stAte played in the Nola bowl

11-2 is a great year! The two teams that beat App were better.

Well you're certainly never allowed to mock App State fans who point to offensive line injuries as the reason we played so poorly in the second half against stAte.

Next year someone needs to define what "power rankings" mean.if it means conference standings there is no point to them-- just go by conference standings

RE: Your Final 2015 SBC Power Rankings
If GS, StAte, and App were baseball players on a team…

StAte is the highest-paid guy on the team…does enough to earn the incentives in his contract, but not much else beyond that. Coaches and fans expect more from him.

GS is the fan favorite and media darling. Leads the team in home runs but also leads in strikeouts. Goes through a few brief cold streaks but has also had some solo shots won games as well.

App State is a versatile, clutch player with nothing that jumps out at you as outstanding but nothing that's bad in their stats. By on-base percentage and some advanced saber metrics he is the best player on the team.

I agree. What does a power ranking mean? stAte won the conference. App had the more impressive season, IMO. GS was third in all categories. followed by GSU.

Whole lot of rationalizing your way to a conclusion to make a person feel good. OOC schedules are not comparable.... almost never comparable. USC and Clemson are a wash but Wyoming and ODU vs. Toledo and Mizzou? ULM has wins over Alabama, Arkansas, Wake Forest (twice), narrow losses to Auburn and Baylor in recent years. I would not trade places with them in a million years. To achieve something significant outside of a conference title, we all have to run the table in the SBC AND win 3 OOC games without an embarrassing loss (same goes for every G5 conference). Close losses and an occasional win over some mediocre P5 or G5 program mean little without also running the table in conference.

Power rankings are that thing you do to feel like you are better than the conference champs who thumped your ass on your home field and got the trophy.

Here's a hint. In 20 years our conference championship will still be written on the stadium wall and listed in the media guides and your advanced statistical and computer ratings will be difficult to find, even on Google.

Would any of you stAte fans trade seasons with us? Think about it.

I would not trade an 11-win season (the first in the Belt) and a historic bowl win for the Belt Championship if it meant 9-4 and a humiliating bowl loss. I would have traded in November, but not today.

Irrelevant to the discussion. If we were talking about who is the conference champion, it would be a pretty short thread.

We got a bowl trophy, and I'm not rationalizing anything, I'm happy for stAte that they won the CC and am not trying to take away from them at all; my earlier point was that "Power Rankings" are subjective, and you get different results depending on the criteria used.

Trading a championship for a bowl win against Ohio and two extra wins against ODU and Wyoming? No thanks.

For most of us at A-State, the primary goal of a season is the conference championship.
