Thanks bullit 60...

My goodness... that is just bigger than the Georgia Southern @ Elon in 2013. Which had maybe 200 in attendance.

I'm not gonna hate too hard. I hope we can avoid articles like this (and reading the reactions on this board).

As hard as it is to believe, I was at an FIU/Troy game several years ago and hand counted every single person in the stands. There were less than 250 at kickoff. That is not an exaggeration. Unless you've been there, it will be hard to fathom.

If no one cares, why do they even bother with the sport?

Fourth largest University in the COUNTRY folks in a large metro area. This is when I hear about academics, market, student pop, local pop I chuckle when it is thrown around in football talk. College football is about and ALWAYS will be about winning games. This is why average academic SEC schools in the middle of nowhere pack in 60K+ because the product is good and most teams end up with winning records and go to bowls. All other things can be helpful depending each school's situation but none are in the same universe as winning games.

Agree, except that I think there's much more at play in the Miami area. Even the U has dreadful home attendance at times.

I've traveled to Miami dozens of times over the last 20 years and honestly, when I'm there, I don't even bother speaking English. It's actually easier to just speak Spanish. While I hear about the beaches, and all the other distractions and competition for football, I think the general heritage of the local population may have much to do with the attendance problem.

People just don't care.

They accept more freshman every year than GS's total under grad pop. They have 54000 students. The U needs a stadium closer to campus and win more. Forget the local pop they are not dependable for G5 football. They have enough students and alumni to easily fill that stadium. If nothing else meet 15K. I could only imagine what GS's game attendance would be if we had 54K students and an alumni base that comes with that. The U had no trouble selling out games when they were winning and competing for NC's and they are a tiny private school.

To prove my point just look at the 2010 and 2011 attendance they win and people attend and they have no problem exceeding 15K. None of that other stuff seemed to matter with a winning record.

So we have a fan of a school in the same conference on another conference board bashing a conference member....

Just seems odd for that to happen when this fans school was just disbanded because of lack of support. Seems really strange a UAB fan talking down about any program.

Also after attending 2 Western games at FIU (3rd on the 21st) FIU has a late arriving crowd. Yes I know even doubling the number would still not be much of a improvement....

it probably doubled in the 2nd qt. But we are talking about a 12pm kickoff in Miami against a school that just started their program 3 years ago.

Lets also put something else in perspective...

in 11 seasons of football FIU went to more bowl games (2) than UAB and all but 3 SBC current members

Providing a picture to the discussion is considered bashing?

Adding to the discussion in the way he did....

was bashing a conference member.

I visit and read this board fairly often. I still watch SBC football every chance I get (even the new members) or at least parts of games. As a former member of this conference I still feel a connection to it.

UAB never played football or basketball with any of the current members (basketball with GST and USA) . Which really has nothing to do with it but still kind of would explain why if UAB was ever a member of the SBC football. So adding to a topic that's talking about a school in the same conference is bashing in the context of his post.

Attendance is no longer important.....

if it was our ADs wouldn't allow our schools to play on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Nor would they let games start at 11am or 8pm on a week night. Their action tells fans.....

butts in the seats are not their number one goal

Attendance should be important because it's the easiest and quickest way our schools can add dollars to the bottom line. All of our schools ADs action says other wise.

Western had 5 home games this year

1 week night game
1 2:30 Saturday afternoon game
3 11am starting times

BeliefBlazer has gone to multiple SBC games this year and has pretty much adopted our league for his football fix, so I don't really question his motive for adding to discussions in this forum.

What I've never understood is how they can't get more people there. Miami has more a lot more to do on a Saturday, but there's no way they should have 400 people at a game. If they aren't selling beer, they should. I mean you could walk around the campus and give tickets out while having some sort of special on beer and get way more people than that. Even EMU packs in 4,000ish regularly.

edit: The Cristobal firing really did hurt them but they always were having these kind of attendance problems.

Does anyone really think App had 18 or 19k at the game last week vs ASU? I believe the official number was close to 19k

Unless 17k was on the home side there was not close to that many fans at the game.

Same thing I saw with a week night game at ASU earlier this season
I know USA fans said they are the only school in FBS that uses actually count...again not by what I've seen on my TV.
Rice had maybe 4,000 to 5,000 fans at the Western game a few weeks ago and they listed 20k. Pictures I saw showed maybe 3k but I was there and 1500 or so were doing what we could to get out of the sun...not seen

No matter the number of fans at a FIU game...100 or 30k FIU is going to be more valuable than most of our programs.. Us fans in small markets might not agree with that but....

Don't know about USA, but until recently the Cajuns were one of the few programs that counted and reported tickets scanned at the gate. Fortunately we've apparently dropped the practice so we can report inflated numbers like everyone else.

And while I understand the market size, TV audience arguments, etc, as it relates to the school's "value", does it not stand to reason that if 300 people show up at the game, few will be interested in watching it at home? I know there are means by which those viewing audience numbers are tabulated, and I guess a certain percentage of TV sets might accidentally be left on during an F_U game, but still.
