RE: This week in CUSA basketball
Western's game is part of our Fla tourney...
basically a free game and with the late date the tourney field was put together we had no choice but to buy a D2 game. Each team was guaranteed 4 games but they could only put enough schools together for a tourney setup that allows 3 games in Fla.
So each school had a home game they could fill if they choose to do that. Since Western is making about 90k off each home game in ticket money and this game cost us in the 25k range ..do the match no AD was turning down a free 65-80k (concessions)

Surely you don't think every game needs to be against the top 50 or even the top 100? If you do you really don't have a clue about how the RPI works
Schools need to win OOC games it's that simple...win 60 to 65% no matter who they are against (D1) and our conference RPI along with more top 100 schools in conference will be good enough to get that at large bid for a team with a good enough record.

Did I say they all need to be top 100 games? But come on....look at some of those games. Seriously? Really aiming for the stars huh? It's fine, we'll just continue to be a conference with a bunch of sub 200 teams. It'll be great.

Teams should schedule games they have a shot at winning a good shot...
should stay away from the top 25 schools and most of us should avoid scheduling top 50 teams. Only those that are expecting to complete for the conference title and a at large bid should schedule above their ability.
Of course going into the season some teams wont know if they are good enough to compete for the CUSA title till they are in conference play. So it's a crap shot for those 1 or 2 schools.
Point is once you compound each OOC win over the conference schedule...
any win is valuable.
A win against the #328 RPI team is more valuable to the conference than a loss to the #1 team. Not to each of our on RPI, early, but to the conference. That's why any rules that dictate playing top 150 or top 100 teams ooc is a bad rule.
Each of us has a good ideal what talent we have coming back and should schedule to that talent for the most wins possible. Of course 1 or 2 games against good teams should be included...but don't load up on games like that.

RE: This week in CUSA basketball
If you are only confident winning against Millsaps, Campbellsville and college of christ in god of Wyoming then this conference is in far worse trouble than I thought. Some of those games are ridiculous. Spin it however you like.

You are failing to realize confidence and winning are not the same...
Teams should schedule to their talent level they expect to have. When they don't that's when you get RPI killer teams during conference place 30+% of the time. With that D2 games will not help but sometimes it's what you can get.

Ooooo sick burn. The Monarchs aquitted themselves quite nicely last season, and are poised to have a fantastic year. Pretty sure I remember smoking wku towards the end of the season if that counts for anything.
But that's neither here nor there. This discussion is about the abysmal games some of our members have chosen for their openers....would you care to comment on the actual topic?

RE: This week in CUSA basketball
And herein lies the issue. In football, we all pump our chests out and brag about our teams, fans, etc - yet we really have ZERO legitimate chance to compete for a FBS championship.
Men's and women's basketball, while slanted towards the P5, still offers an opportunity for an ambitious program to not only make national noise, but to actually compete for a national title. And yet many of you want to accept, without challenge, our status as second hand citizens fighting for the crumps off of the P5 table. Screw that. I choose the path of earning my way via beating good teams (whether it works or not), vice fattening up on D2, Meac, Swac, and Big South cupcakes that do nothing to indicate whether a team is worthy or not. To each their own, just a difference of philosophy.

yep. we spent all of last year in the preseason being preached to by the odu faithful for all of us to get our acts together.
and then you still didn't win the conference. that's it. i would be willing to bet not one person on any coaching staff in cusa reads 'scheduling for dummies' written by the odu faithful.
they say a rising tide lifts all ships. so why don't you and Cap'n Jones show us how it's done this preseason.
and tell us how the following teams are going to carry our conference:
#303 Niagara
#324 Morgan State
#355 Delaware State
#304 Maryland Eastern Shore
#231 Norfolk State
