Can't speak for everyone but no arrogance intended here. It's just that, when we continually have 27-30 win teams get left out of the Big Dance, we need to look at scheduling as a conference.

Not to pick on UTEP, but since their fans have already addressed this, they could win 30 this year and likely not see the NCAA Tournament.

Nobody should ever be defending scheduling DII opponents. I don't care about the RPI argument. Schedule like you have some respect in your program. Recruits and players know DII games don't count. It's just makes your program look bad. You're essentially trotting the guys out to risk injury for a meaningless game.

my fault.

this is western's second year in CUSA.

this is the second year in a row that 'some' odu fans came across as bags....in my opinion. talking down to the rest of the conference. i have a 2 year sample size. 2/2.

you've refuted nothing other than you don't play any d2 teams. just like everyone else you have some TERRIBLE teams on your schedule. TERRIBLE teams. that will drag everyone else down. our conference gains nothing from you playing those TERRIBLE teams while a d2 game has zero impact on RPI. zero impact.

do you honestly believe that odu was left out of the tourney last year because some of the other conference teams played a d2 squad? odu was left out because of their shortcomings. nobody else's.

you're welcome.

RE: This week in CUSA basketball
As long as the selection committee (and also the media) continues to emphasize rpi SOS overall and to ignore individual rpi's, then conferences should try to rack up as many wins as possible against D1 teams, with teams expected to be worse playing absolute cupcake schedules but always against D-1 opponents. We also know that the selection committee compares conferences using the average rpi (at least they've said things like this in the past), but they don't always specify whether it's OOC average rpi or overall average rpi. If the latter, then conferences benefit greatly when their teams rack up wins regardless of opponent strength in OOC.

We all know the real reason they do this. The individual rpi factors in a large correction for home court, while the rpi SOS does not. So the major conference teams can play at most 3 or 4 true road games OOC, with the majority of teams playing 2, 1, even 0 true road games OOC. For the elite teams, this makes no difference, they most likely are better than teams from other conferences either way. But for the marginal teams that sweep up the 5th, 6th, 7th etc. bids, they get an advantage in terms of selection and attention that's at least partially based on data skewed by the advantage of their entire conference piling up OOC wins on home courts.

Fringe-multi-bid conferences like CUSA absolutely should play the game smartly, which means teams scheduling to their expected level and replacing D2 games with bad D1 games (might hurt their individual rpi a bit, but will benefit the conference as a whole). The problem lately has been a) better teams having trouble scheduling decent yet non-elite opponents the next year (that's not going to change, so we just have to deal with it), b) the bad teams being so awful they lose to cupcakes, c) the good teams being inconsistent in conference play (e.g. ODU last year), and d) a few teams scheduling insane OOC schedules (e.g. Tulsa a couple years back hurt their conference mates, even if it helped their own team develop).

Do you really think any of these players are thinking "meaningful" when UNCC plays Elon? I'm sure they are saying...who?

But lets forget about that for one moment....

going on 15 years since UNCC won a NCAA Tourney game
Going on 11 years since UNCC made the NCAA Tourney

Do one of those but hopefully both before talking about other programs "looking bad"

Just noticed one thing.....

NOT ONE MARSHALL FAN ...telling us how awful we all are. But some of the ODU fans are trying to be the marshall of the basketball

More meaningful than a glorified scrimmage, which seems to be the path you'd like your team to take.

This one ODU fan would be intensely proud to be the Marshall of CUSA basketball.

Apparently WKU posters (at least those littering this thread) aspire to nothing greater than talking down fans of other teams who have the nerve to care about a sport other than football.

Yet my team was the key one that kept ODU out of the NCAA Tourney last year...

and knocked your team from the short run in the top 25.....

I guess we will call ODU a one week wonder. But honestly ODU fans must be used to that one and done....

not only have you never lasted 2 weeks in the polls, your never made it past 1 win in the NCAA Tourney. It seem strange a fan of a school that's won a total of THREE NCAA GAMES and never more than one in a row...

talking smack on scheduling. I would think ODU fans would have more to worry about. Like will it take another 39 years to enter the top 25.

Like I said...let fans that are use to winning and getting to the NCAA talk

I'd credit UTSA and MTSU more with keeping us out of the tourney, since I seem to remember a certain game at the end of the year when we absolutely whooped your team.

Can't wait to whoop'em again in a few months!

Like I said move along ODU fans...

let the big boys talk about basketball...even in Western's down periods, one of the worse in our history we go to two NCAA Tourneys.

So back on out and hopefully a UAB will join this topic so us two can talk basketball and not worry about scheduling.

Nice shot across the bow, but...
  • Elon is a DIV I team in the CAA, so they will be playing a decent schedule of conference games; this is better than playing a reduced scholarship team.
  • Their coach, Matt Matheny, was an assistant under Bob McKillop at Davidson for 16 years. I have to believe he is going to get Elon to the top of the CAA.
  • Elon has Michigan, Syracuse, and Duke scheduled in addition to Charlotte. Perhaps you should make their fans aware of what a bad move this is.
  • Charlotte will be playing Syracuse, Michigan/UCONN. Davidson, Georgetown in OOC. We can afford an Elon game.
  • Charlotte knows what it is like to go to the NCAAs almost every year, and we know what it is like to miss them. Getting back to the Big Dance will be because we hired a better coach, not because we decided we should swap out Georgetown for Mt Olive College.

RE: This week in CUSA basketball
Playing bad teams and losing to those same bad teams is what's killing CUSA basketball.

But there are also a deeper reality at play. Budgets. Schools trying to fund programs through guarantees will flounder in the long run. Financial inequality in program resources is the root of all this discussion and in the long run is a big driver to realignment. Just look at look at the budgets of the schools that left for the AAC.

In the end, schools that expect to win just have to win the games that they should win.

Here is the only thing you need to know.....

90% of the time when Western has a team good enough to make the NCAA Tourney...

we don't leave it up to anyone else

The only time it was even close in the last 25 years and Western didn't make the tourney (Western was said to be the last team left out by the committee's president) was 2005-06 and Western got stomped by S. Alabama in the conference finials...Courtney Lee broke his hand before the tourney started during practice

All of this back-and-forth bickering reminds me of Thanksgiving at my house, except after two hours of that crap at least I get a piece of pie!

It's good to be back with our old Sun Belt brethren of WKU, UAB & Charlotte. We hated you then, we hate you now...and the feeling is reciprocated. Cool! Throw in Empty Sue, LTech and UTEP and we have the makings of some really nice rivalries. Can't wait for January.
