UAB! I'd love you guys to get something on-campus, but this the next best thing since the university can't pay for it. I'm really, really happy for you guys! How far is Legion Field from the campus? Will the new one be closer?

Hopefully this becomes reality for UAB. Much needed.

Not paid by UAB. It's the city and UAB would not own the facility

I didn't say it would be paid by UAB. I said, "the community".

While the 24k-30k OCS would have been a grand slam, this is still a big win for UAB if it comes to pass.

Probably the same events that were at Legion Field with the addition of the high school football state title game. The 45,000 seats a bit small to replace Legion Field IMO but let's see where this leads.

I think it is a bit small as well. I wonder if this is built what effect it will have on the Magic City Classic, Birmingham's biggest revenue generating sporting event?

If they don't want the Classic here, it can move. You can't build a stadium based off one event. 45,000 is perfect if not a little to big for UAB and the Birmingham Bowl. Make those things better, keep the C-USA basketball tourney, and add some NCAA games that would be great.

They could design it for temp bleachers to be brought in to expand capacity for singular events.

Who is they? I didn't say the BJCC should build a stadium around one event. That said, the Classic generates more money than all of the UAB homes games and the Birmingham Bowl combined. You may not care what happens to The Classic based off of your response but trust me when I tell you BJCC and city officials to include the Mayor do care.

As far as anyone knows, Classic reps may be perfectly fine with a 45,000 seat stadium. I know you want what is best for UAB, I want what is best for Birmingham to include UAB. And Birmingham cannot financially afford to lose the Classic.

When that single event has a 25-30 million dollar impact on the city's economy it would be a bad idea to figure out how to accompany it.

BJCC= Birmingham-Jefferson(County) Civic Complex

The BJCC is a separate entity from the city of B'ham. It can issue its own bonds. The city owns Legion Field and can continue to operate it separate from the BJCC stadium.

Hope this answered everyone's questions.

Except it widely known that this BJCC stadium is going to replace Legion Field. The city would be silly to continue to operate a stadium for only one event a year. But we are talking Birmingham so who knows. But I don't expect this new BJCC stadium to be built before 2021 anyway.

Think of the irony if UAB were ever able to lure Alabama into playing them in it's new stadium. That would be so sick.

Would 45k really be THAT small? I mean, most LARGE events left Legion Field years ago. 45k would sellout nicely for the Birmingham Bowl. Yes, it'd be a little large for UAB football, but closer to campus, with the team rebuilding, getting 30k plus in attendance on avg is possible. Not to mention a 45k stadium can lure P5 schools to play much easier than a stadium of 24-30k could.

Birmingham Bowl attendance has only been over 45k one time, and that was a game when Ole Miss was in it. Most B-Ham bowl attendance has been in the 30-40k range.

The Magic City Classic which is the city's largest event draws about 65k+ and about another 40k or so just for the tailgating. Most of the other HBCU games that are played in Bham are right around that 45k mark.
